We believe that anyone can learn to knit! For this simple hat we used a rib stitch and a stocking stitch worked on a circular knitting needle. With the video tutorial we will show you exactly how these stitches work and how simple knitting on circular needles can be! Be inspired and get going with your own super easy chunky hat for the winter!
What do you need for knitting this hat?
Size hat
The size of this hat is based on a circumference of the head of 56 - 58 cm. Want to make the hat larger or smaller? Then cast on more or less stitches, but make sure you have an even number of stitches.
Stitches used
- Rib stitch 1/1: alternately knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch
- Stocking stitch: on circular knitting needles this requires you only to knit all stitches for a stockinette effect.
Easy Knitting Pattern Hat
Cast on 40 stitches with circular knitting needles 10 mm, 40 cm
Rounds 1 – 16: Knit rib stitch 1/1. After 16 rounds your work measures 12 cm high and 16 cm wide. Keep in mind that when you start wearing it the edge will get wider and shorter!
Rounds 17 – 39: Knit stocking stitch (for circular knitting this only requires knit stitches). After 39 round your work measures 18 cm high measured excluding the ribbed edge.
Round 40: Before you continue place a stitch ring marker before the first stitch on your needle. *Knit 2 tog., knit 2* Repeat from *to* until you have arrived at your stitch marker (30 sts.)
Round 41: Before you continue place a stitch ring marker before the first stitch on your needle.*Knit 2 tog., knit 1* Repeat from *to* until you have arrived at your stitch marker. (20 sts.)
Round 42: Knit 2 tog. all around (10 sts.)
Round 43: Knit 2 tog. all around (5 sts.) You work is 20 cm high measured excluding the ribbed edge.
Draw your end yarn through the remaining 5 stitches and pull tight.
With the leftover yarn make a large pompon using the Clover Pompon maker L and join it to the top of the hat. Weave in the loose ends.
