Knitting a Baby Blanket from Merino Wool - Free Knitting Pattern

Knitting a Baby Blanket - Who wouldn't want to tuck such a tiny little one in with a blanket you made yourself? This baby blanket is soft, warm, and you can make it in any color you like. Get inspired by this free pattern and get started!

This baby blanket is knitted with Lana Grossa Merino Superfein and is a lovely blanket to take with you on the go. The soft yarn, made from 100% merino wool, is wonderfully warm and ideal for wrapping your baby in. You can also choose the popular SMC Catania yarn. This is a 100% cotton yarn that’s also perfect for baby blankets. You can place the different colored blocks right next to each other, but let your creativity run wild and mix up the colors!

Dimensions of the blanket: 78 x 60 cm.

What do you need?
- 3 mm Sock Knitting Needles
- 1 Lana Grossa Vario Circular Knitting Needle, 3 mm, with an extended Lana Grossa Vario cable up to 200 cm.
Lana Grossa Merino Superfine:
- 1 x 3 balls of the main color (raspberry)
- 3 x 2 balls of other colors (yellow, orange, and red)
Unfortunately, the colors used in the baby blanket are no longer available. Fortunately, there are plenty of other color combinations you can make with the same yarn! For example, choose a different shade of pink, go for a bold blue, or opt for a natural green.

Or choose a cotton yarn (washable and lightweight) that’s still available in the same colors as the example.

Knitting a Baby Blanket - Free Knitting Pattern

The baby blanket is made up of 12 squares (3 of each color), all of which are knitted the same way.

1 square: Cast on 8 stitches onto a Knitting Needle; on the first row, distribute the stitches among the 4 needles—2 stitches per needle—and join to form a circle.

Continue knitting according to the chart. The chart covers ¼ of the square. On odd rows, increase 2 stitches per row (8 stitches per round). The even rows are not shown in the chart, but you should knit them as they come.

When the entire pattern has been knitted, loosely bind off the stitches.

Sew the squares together using a cross stitch, placing 3 of the same color side by side, 4 rows high.

Rand:
Row 1: Pick up all stitches while knitting them in stockinette stitch using Yellow yarn and the 3 mm long Circular Knitting Needle.
2nd row: knit with yellow yarn; in the corners, increase as in the squares by making an extra yarn over before and after the corner stitch. (Continue increasing in each corner on every even row.)
3rd row: using the raspberry color, knit all stitches.
4th row: 1 yarn over, knit 2 stitches together, repeat these stitches, and increase at the corners by making a yarn over before and after the corner.
5th row: knit all stitches.
6th row: knit all stitches and increase in the corners.
7th row: knit all stitches in Red.
Row 8: K1, P1. Increase in the corners.
9th row: using orange, knit all stitches.
10th row: *Knit 1 stitch, knit 5 stitches from the next stitch (insert needle into the stitch from the right, knit the stitch, do not let it slip off but reinsert the needle * insert the needle into the same stitch one more time, but this time purl it, knit the stitch, do not let it slip off, knit another knit stitch without letting it slip off **, Repeat from * to ** once (5 stitches).
Repeat these stitches along the entire edge and increase in the corners.
Row 11: Bind off all stitches by knitting them.
