The play mat consists of a total of 25 squares that are knitted together according to a color scheme. The mat is knitted using only stockinette stitches.
Color scheme for the play mat:
Block 1:
Cast on 50 stitches and mark the center between the 25th and 26th stitches.
Row 1: Knit all stitches, then knit the 24th and 25th stitches together as one stitch, and do the same with the 26th and 27th stitches. (This decreases 2 stitches per row.)
2nd row: knit all stitches (no decreases).
Knit all odd rows in this way, decreasing once before and once after the center of the row. (This is the right side of the rug.)
On the even rows, knit all stitches.
Continue knitting the piece until 2 stitches remain; knit them together and fasten off.
Joining the blocks:
The blocks are knitted directly together. The diagonal line of the decrease runs from the bottom left to the top right. This line should run in the same direction on all the pieces.
The pieces are joined together as you knit:
Starting a new section in a horizontal row - First, cast on 25 stitches onto the needle, and then pick up 25 stitches from the right side of the existing piece, knitting from the bottom up as you work.
Adding a square in a vertical row - While knitting, pick up 25 stitches from the top of the existing piece and cast on 25 stitches onto your needle.
Then just continue to knit with the two needles as described.
If you're going to knit a block in the middle, you can pick up the bottom and left edges from the existing blocks as you knit.
