Do you already have cold feet? Knit your own house socks!

Summer was over in the blink of an eye with the cold weather of the past few weeks. Hand-knitted sweaters were pulled out of the closet again, extra-warm cups of tea were brewed, and the time for crafting under a cozy blanket on the couch has (finally) begun again. At home, you probably already have a favorite baggy sweater and a pair of extra-comfortable lounge pants, but do you also have something warm to cover your feet? Not yet? Then knit your own house socks! In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about knitting your own house socks.

Some people are more bothered by it than others: cold feet. There can be various reasons for this, but the main one is that the ambient temperature drops, and with it, the temperature of your feet. With feet, it’s often the case that once they’re cold, they don’t warm up easily on their own. That’s why it’s a good idea to prevent your feet from getting cold. House socks can really help with this!

Yarn suitable for making house socks

House socks come in all shapes and sizes. So, first and foremost, it’s important to choose a type of yarn that feels comfortable to you. If you find several types of yarn comfortable, there are a few tips we can offer.

For example, yarn made from wool retains heat exceptionally well. Think, for instance, of shorn wool and mohair. Do you spend a lot of time walking around in your house socks and do your feet get cold pretty quickly? Then alpaca wool is the best choice. This textile fiber is known for being warmer than many other types of wool, and it’s also exceptionally strong.

Are you sensitive to wool fibers? If so, there are still plenty of other types of yarn to choose from. For example, there’s Sock Yarn made from Acrylic, Polyamide, Viscose, and Silk. Want to learn more about the fibers that might be in your yarn? Read more about it in this blog.

Tools for Knitting Socks

The most common craft technique for making socks is to knit. You can do this using Circular Knitting Needles or sock needles. It can also be helpful to use sock stretchers. This tool is a handy aid for shaping your socks and ensuring that both socks are the same size. Here’s how to use the stretchers: first, knit your socks; then, wet them, pull the sock over the stretcher, and let them dry. It’s that simple! Sock stretchers also come in various sizes, so you can find the right one for any sock-knitting project.

For (beginner) sock knitters, we also sell handy kits that provide you with all the materials you need right away.
