February is here, which means it’s time for a new “Stitch of the Month.” We’ve already introduced you to zigzag crochet; this month, we’re going to try our hand at chevron knitting. In this blog post, we’ll show you how to knit this zigzag stitch with a handy video tutorial and a free pattern. Keep reading!
Chevron knitting, also known as zigzag knitting, gives your knitting a beautiful wavy effect. These stitches are therefore great fun to use for projects like a blanket, baby blanket, or a delicate scarf. In chevron knitting, you decrease and increase at specific points, which creates a zigzag effect. For this version, we’re knitting in stockinette stitch, but you can also mix things up by using garter stitch or adding extra yarn overs. Ready to get started? Then check out the video now!

Chevron Knitting Pattern
Cast on a number of stitches that is divisible by 14 + 2.
Row 1 (wrong side): Knit all stitches.
Needle 2 (right side): Knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together (insert the needle into the stitch, yarn over, and pull the yarn through, but do not knit the stitch; now insert the needle into the back loop of the stitch and knit), knit 4 stitches.
Bottom row (decrease 2 stitches): Slip one stitch onto the right needle without knitting it, knit the next stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch on the right needle; now knit 2 stitches together, knit 4 stitches.
Top point (increase 2 stitches): Knit 2 stitches together (insert the needle into the stitch, make a yarn over, and pull it through, but do not knit the stitch; now insert the needle into the back loop of the stitch and knit), then decrease 1 stitch, knit 4 stitches.
You now have 2 stitches left. Knit 2 stitches together (insert the needle into the stitch, make a yarn over, and pull it through, but do not knit the stitch; then insert the needle into the back loop of the stitch and knit), and knit 1 stitch.
Needle 3: Purl all stitches.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until the piece reaches the desired height.
Baste the piece onto a needle with the right side of the piece facing you.
