Knit a Double-Sided Scarf with Lana Grossa

New year, new challenge! Our colleague Carla got to work on this double-faced cowl. Highly recommended for the experienced knitters among us! Double knitting is a wonderful technique where you knit the inside and outside at the same time. This creates a beautiful mirror image, making it really fun to wear the cowl inside out. You just have to get the hang of it. Will you give it a try?

With double-faced knitting, you knit not only an outer layer but also an additional inner layer at the same time. Both sides look like stockinette stitch. You knit only knit and purl stitches. The pattern on the outside is mirrored on the inside, with the colors reversed. The color that stands out most on one side is the opposite on the other. For the cowl, for example, Carla used white and ochre yellow in combination with a pattern from Gomitolo. However, Lana Grossa Bingo is available in nearly 60 different colors, so you can always make a double-faced cowl in your favorite color. Thanks to the merino wool, the scarf is also nice and warm and feels soft against the skin.

Tools & Supplies:
- 1 ball of Lana Grossa Gomitolo 200 (color 204)
- 4 balls of Lana Grossa Bingo (color 154 or 5)
- 5 mm Circular Knitting Needle, 80 cm long
- 1 stitch marker

For both scarves, use color 204 (referred to as color A in the pattern) of Lana Grossa Gomitolo. For the yellow scarf, use Bingo in color 154, and for the white scarf, use Bingo in color 5. Bingo is referred to as color B in the pattern. You can make two scarves from one ball of Gomitolo, and you’ll still have yarn left over for a cute matching hat, for example.

There are also other fun combinations you can try: for example, you can alternate Bingo color 231 with Gomitolo color 203. Or combine Gomitolo color 201 with Bingo color 242.

Stitches used:
st = stitch
re = knit stitch
av = purl stitch

Double-Sided Scarf Knitting Pattern

Cast on 392 stitches using color A (Gomitolo) and join to form a circle. Mark the transition.

Knit 1 stitch with color A. Bring the yarn of color A to the front, purl 1 stitch with color B. Bring both yarns to the back, knit 1 stitch with color A. Bring both yarns to the front, purl 1 stitch with color B. Repeat until the end of the round.
So, both strands are always placed on the same side of the work when you knit a stitch. The knit stitch is the one you see on the outside. The purl stitch is the one on the inside. 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch make up a stitch pair.

The stitch pattern applies only to the outside—that is, to the stitches you knit. So you also need to purl one stitch in the color for the inside each time. In the pattern, 1 square represents a pair of stitches.

From now on, knit according to the stitch pattern:

Needle 1: *1 knit stitch in color B, 1 purl stitch in color A. Then 13 times: 1 knit stitch in color A and 1 purl stitch in color B.* Repeat from * to * 13 more times.
Needle 2: * 1 knit stitch in color A, 1 purl stitch in color B, 1 knit stitch in color B, 1 purl stitch in color A. Then 11 times: 1 knit stitch in color A, 1 purl stitch in color B, 1 knit stitch in color B, 1 purl stitch in color A. * Repeat from * to * 13 more times.

Follow the pattern as shown. Knit the pattern 3 times vertically, ending with row 1 of the count pattern. Then knit 1 more row without the count pattern—that is, 1 knit stitch in color A and 1 purl stitch in color B. Knit the last row using only color A.

Finishing: Bind off loosely using color A by repeatedly knitting 2 knit stitches twisted together: knit 2 knit stitches twisted together twice, then pass the first stitch over the second. Repeat until all stitches are bound off.
