Knitting is all the rage! Walk into any clothing store this winter and you’ll see them in all shapes and sizes. But how fun would it be to make one of those beautiful cable-knit sweaters yourself? It might look super difficult, but it’s actually really easy if you have a cable needle. Practice makes perfect! Just like this lovely cable-knit sweater!

To be completely honest: it does help to master the basics of knitting first. So, if you’re an advanced knitter, give this cable-knit sweater a try—made with Lana Grossa Mohairlana. This fine yarn is a blend of mohair, wool, and Polyamide and feels incredibly soft against your skin. That’s why this fluffy yarn is ideal for making all kinds of garments. We’ve chosen a neutral color to really let the cable pattern shine. However, Mohairlana is available in 18 different colors. Choose your favorite and step out this winter (or next) in this lovely knitted cable-knit sweater.

Tools & Supplies:

- 1 cable needle

The knitted cable-knit sweater is described for the following sizes: 36/38, 40/42, 44/46. The measurements for sizes 40/42 and 44/46 are listed consecutively in parentheses. If only one number is listed, it applies to all sizes.

Stitches used:

Edge stitch: work as a buttonhole edge, always knitting the first and last stitches.
Edge pattern: row 1: knit 1, purl 1.
Large barley stitch: knit 1, purl 1, decrease 1, shift the stitches after every 2nd row.
Cable 1: over 6 sts, from the 2nd row over 8 sts: work according to knitting chart 1. The numbers on the far right indicate the right-side row; on the wrong-side row, work the sts as they appear. Across the width, knit the marked stitches once. Note: on the 1st row, increase 2 stitches = 8 stitches. Vertically, knit rows 1–10 once, then repeat rows 3–10.
Cable 2: over 13 sts, from the 2nd row over 18 sts: work according to knitting chart 2. The numbers on the far right indicate the right-side row; on the wrong-side row, work the sts as they appear. Across the width, knit the marked sts once. Note: on the 1st row, increase 5 sts = 18 sts. Vertically, knit rows 1–6 once, then repeat rows 3–6.
Pattern: over 5 sts: work 3 sts as shown in the chart. The numbers on the far right indicate the right-side row; on the wrong-side row, work the sts as they appear or according to the instructions. Across the width, work the marked 5 sts once. In height, work rows 1–6 once, then repeat rows 3–6. Note: Always knit with 4 strands of yarn.

Explanation of the symbols:

= 1 s straight
= 1 s av
= 1 garter stitch (knit straight stitches back and forth)
= 1 s knit when increasing at the cross-thread
= 1 stitch inserted deeper (i.e., 1 knit stitch, inserting the needle 1 row deeper into the stitch and letting the stitch above it slide off the needle)
= Cross 4 sts to the right (= place 2 sts on a cable needle behind the work, knit the next 2 sts, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle)
= Cross 4 sts to the left (= place 2 sts on a cable needle in front of the work, knit the next 2 sts, then knit the 2 sts from the cable needle)
= Cross 8 sts to the right (= place the next 4 sts on a cable needle behind the work, knit the next 4 sts, then knit the 4 sts from the cable needle)
= Cross 8 sts to the left (= place 4 sts on a cable needle in front of the work, knit the next 4 sts, then knit the 4 sts from the cable needle)

Gauge swatch: 10 sts and 13 rows in large barleycorn stitch, using 4 strands of yarn with size 8 needles = 10 x 10 cm. 8 sts of cable 1 = 6 cm wide, 18 sts of cable 2 = 10 cm wide, 5 sts of patent pattern = 6 cm wide, knitted using 4 strands of yarn with size 8 needles.

Back:
51 (55, 59) sts; cast on using 4 strands of yarn with size 7 needles, and work 6 cm [=10 rows] in ribbing for the collar. Then continue working with size 8 needles according to the following pattern: edge sts, 7 (9, 11) sts large barley seed stitch, 6 sts or, starting on the 2nd row, 8 sts cable, 5 sts fisherman’s rib, 13 sts or, starting on the 2nd row, 18 sts cable 2, 5 sts fisherman’s rib, 6 sts or, starting on the 2nd row, 8 sts cable 1, 7 (9, 11) sts large barley stitch, edge sts = 60 (64, 68) sts starting on the 2nd row. For the armholes, after 34 cm [= 44 rows] from the edge, decrease 1x 2 sts and 2x 1 st in every 2nd row on both sides = 52 (56, 60) sts. After 15 cm [= 20 rows] (17 cm = 24 rows) 19 cm [= 26 rows] for the armholes, for the neck edge, bind off the middle 20 (20, 22) sts as they appear and finish both sides separately. For the round inner edge, on the following 2nd row, decrease 3 sts one more time. Decrease the remaining 13 (15, 16) sts for the shoulder all at once after 3 cm [= 4 rows] for the neckline.
Front cover:
Same as above, but with a lower neckline: after 13 cm = 16 rows (15 cm = 20 rows, 17 cm = 22 rows), for the armholes, bind off the middle 16 (16, 18) sts and finish both sides separately. For the round inner edge, decrease 3 sts once and 2 sts once in every 2nd row. Decrease the remaining 13 (15, 16) sts for the shoulder at the same height as on the back piece.
Sleeves:
Cast on 23 (25, 27) sts using 4 strands of yarn and size 7 needles, and work 6 cm [= 10 rows] in ribbing for the cuff. In the last row of the ribbing, increase 10 times by working 1 twisted single crochet evenly spaced along the crosswise strand = 33 (35, 37) sts. Then continue working in the following pattern using size 8 needles: edge sts, 9 (10, 11) sts large barley seed stitch, 13 sts or, starting on the 2nd row, 18 sts cable 2, 9 (10, 11) sts large barley seed stitch, edge sts = 38 (40, 42) sts starting on the 2nd row. For the slanted sleeve edges, starting from the ribbing on the right side, increase 1 st 4 times in every 12th row (5 times in every 10th row), 2 times in every 10th row, and 4 times in every 8th row = 46 (50, 54) sts. Work the increased sts into the large barleycorn pattern. For the sleeve cap, after 44 cm = 56 rows (45 cm = 58 rows, 46 cm = 60 rows) from the cuff, on the right side, increase 1 stitch twice in every 2nd row and 2 stitches once in every 2nd row, then bind off the remaining 38 (42, 46) stitches all at once.
Finish:
Block the pieces, dampen them, and let them dry. Sew the side and shoulder seams. Sew the sleeve seams, leaving the top 4 cm open from *. At the neckline, using the circular needle and 4 strands of yarn, pick up approx. 52 (52, 56) sts and work 2.5 cm of ribbing for the neckline trim, then bind off the sts. Set in the sleeves.
