How do you care for hand-knitted clothing?

Hand-knitted clothing is unique, lovingly made, and deserves extra care to stay beautiful. Nothing is more of a shame than a beautiful sweater or scarf that loses its shape or softness. In this blog, we’ll give you practical tips to keep your knits in top condition for as long as possible. Want to read along?

1. Washing: Gentle and Tailored

Hand-knitted clothing requires gentle care. Therefore, always check the yarn label first for specific care instructions—each type of yarn may have different requirements when it comes to washing. In most cases, hand washing is the safest option. This prevents the fibers from being unnecessarily stretched or damaged. Use lukewarm water and a mild detergent. This gently cleans your knitwear while also caring for the fibers, keeping them soft and supple. Prefer to use the washing machine? Always use a laundry bag to prevent friction with other garments. Also, select a wool or hand-wash cycle at a low temperature and use only a small amount of detergent.

2. Drying: Lay flat and out of the sun

Hanging wet knitted items is a big no-no, because the weight of the water pulls the fibers downward and can permanently distort or stretch the shape of your garment. To ensure that your hand-knitted creation retains its shape, it’s important to follow the proper procedure.

Here's how to do it right: After washing, gently squeeze the excess water out of the knitwear, but avoid wringing or twisting it. Then lay the garment flat on a dry towel and roll it up to absorb even more moisture. Replace the towel once if it gets too damp.

Next, lay the knitted piece flat to dry completely. It’s best to use a blocking mat for this. These special mats provide a stable and breathable surface on which you can neatly pin or stretch the garment into shape. This is especially helpful for parts like sleeves or hems that tend to curl or lose their shape. By drying it this way, your knitted piece will stay nice and smooth and retain its original fit and appearance.

3. Storage: Breathable and Safe Storage

Hand-knitted garments are often seasonal and aren’t worn every day. That’s why it’s important to store them properly when they’re not in use. Always store your knits folded and place them in a breathable storage bag or a cotton bag. This will prevent them from collecting dust or attracting moths. Preferably use a storage solution such as Cotton storage bags designed specifically for crafts. To keep moths and other unwanted visitors away, you can add a scented sachet or a piece of cedar wood. This will keep your projects safe and fresh until the next time you use them.

4. Removing pills: for a smooth finish

Hand-knitted clothing may develop slight fuzz or little balls—also known as pilling—over time. This is a natural process, especially with softer yarns and frequent wear. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean your knitted garment loses its charm. Use a special wool comb or de-piller to gently remove the pills without damaging the yarn. Always work slowly and carefully, and comb in the direction of the stitches. After this treatment, your garment will look neat and like new again, ready to be worn once more.

5. Refresh in Between: Decrease Washing, Stay Looking Good Longer

You don’t need to wash your knitted items after every time you wear them. In fact, washing them too often can damage the fibers. Airing them out is often enough. Hang the garment outside for a while (out of direct sunlight) or in a well-ventilated room to let any odors dissipate. For a quick refresh, you can use a natural wool spray. These sprays neutralize odors and give your knitwear a subtle refresh without having to wash it. Perfect for breathing new life into your garment between washes!
