Knitting the Honeycomb Stitch - Stitch of the Month

It’s June! And that means it’s time for a new “Stitch of the Month”—this time, the honeycomb stitch. But first, let’s take a look back at May. Did you manage to knit the diamond stitch? Did a little gem slip off your Knitting Needles? Show us your results on Facebook or Instagram. Or leave a comment below. We can’t wait to see them!

This month, we’re going to learn the honeycomb stitch. As the name suggests, this stitch takes its name from the hexagonal cells that make up a beehive. Using this stitch creates a subtle honeycomb texture on your knitting. It’s a bold texture perfect for blankets and decorative pillows, but also for sweaters and other garments. The honeycomb stitch not only makes your project unique, but the texture also adds a bit of thickness. To sum it up: you’ve mastered yet another new stitch, and your finished piece is a cool accessory or garment that also keeps you warm… A win-win-win situation!

Fun fact: the back of your knitting will eventually become the front! That’s because the honeycomb pattern forms on the “wrong side” of your knitting.

The pattern consists of four rows, which you can repeat indefinitely. To begin, cast on a multiple of 4 stitches, plus 1 edge stitch on each side. For our pattern, we’re casting on 22 stitches.

1st row (right side of work): 1 edge stitch, *cross 2 knit stitches to the right (first knit the 2nd stitch to the right of the 1st stitch. Then knit the 1st stitch), 2 knit stitches crossed to the left (first knit the 2nd stitch behind the 1st stitch. Then knit the 1st stitch)*. Repeat from * to *, ending with 1 edge stitch.
2nd and 4th rows: 1 edge stitch, knit all stitches in between, 1 edge stitch.
3rd row: 1 edge stitch, *cross 2 knit stitches to the left, cross 2 knit stitches to the right*. Repeat from * to *, ending with 1 edge stitch.
