Knit a Star - Stitch of the Month

Star Knitting - Want to knit an adorable baby blanket, a pot holder, or a cute little tablecloth? With a chart pattern and the barleycorn stitch, you can create the cutest little shapes in your knitting! Curious how? Check out this STER-ke tutorial.

Every month, we feature a stitch that you can use to create all kinds of fun projects. It’s a real pick-me-up that will keep you busy for a while. This time, it’s a chart pattern in the shape of a star. You’ll knit simply in stockinette stitch and use the barleycorn stitch in the chart.
How exactly do you knit the barley stitch? Check out the instructions in our online knitting course.

This crochet project wouldn't be much fun if you couldn't mix things up! Choose your favorite yarn, combine different shades, or switch up the stitches. Each approach creates a unique effect, so the choice is yours!

What do you need?

You can use any yarn to knit this pattern. Choose a thicker yarn for a large star that’s a bit sturdier, or a thinner yarn to make a more delicate piece. For this star, we’re using Phil Coton 3, color 60 “Pacifique,” and knitting with size 3 needles.

Stitches used:
- Empty square = knit on the right side of the work, purl on the wrong side (trico stitch)
- round = purl on the right side of the work, knit on the wrong side (barleycorn stitch)

Star Knitting Pattern

Use knitting needles 1 through 30 and follow the chart. Alternate between stockinette stitch and seed stitch at the right times. Et voilà, your star is done!
