Free Knitting Pattern for Potholders
Preparation
The knitted pattern is large, so we won’t carry the yarn behind the work; instead, we’ll use a new strand. Make a second ball of the Khaki (091) yarn, and also make a small ball of the Khaki and Mustard (015) colors (for the top of the heart).
Front
Cast on 43 stitches (41 pattern stitches and 2 edge stitches) using the Khaki yarn.
The first and last stitches are always edge stitches. Knit the return row in purl. Now begin the pattern as shown in the chart.
On row 9 (the right-side row), after the 3 Mustard stitches, join a second strand of Khaki. Continue knitting according to the chart (see the image below). To avoid holes, it’s best to cross the strands at the color change.
On row 42 (return row), after 13 Mustard stitches, join a new strand of Khaki. On row 43 (outward row), join a new strand of Mustard.
Continue knitting the pattern as shown in the diagram. Knit one row. On the next row (working back), loosely bind off. Weave in your ends on the back.
Back Cover
Cast on 43 stitches (41 pattern stitches and 2 edge stitches) using color Denim (061). The first and last stitches are always edge stitches. Knit the first row. Knit 54 rows in stockinette stitch. Knit one row. Loosely bind off on the next row.
Finishing
Place the front and back pieces with the wrong sides together. At the top right corner, attach a strand of Denim yarn and chain 20 chain stitches for the loop. Then crochet the front and back pieces together using single crochet. At the corners, work 3 single crochets into one stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Attach a strand of Mustard yarn and crochet around the potholder, including the loop, using slip stitches in the back loop. Fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.
