The pointed scarf is a design by our very own Petra, also known as “De Breister.” The pointed scarf is a really fun piece for the coming winter. You can wear it as a scarf, but it also works great as a Shawl! The pointed scarf, as pictured, is knitted with Rico Essential Alpaca Blend Chunky. Want to know how to make this scarf yourself? You’ll find the complete Knitting Pattern in the blog post: Knitting a Pointed Scarf.
3 Ways to Knit a Scarf for Beginners

In the examples, we’ve chosen three different yarns and three different finishing techniques. Which scarf is your favorite?
Free Knitting Pattern: Twist Scarf
This trendy cowl is knitted using the barleycorn stitch. The barleycorn stitch is a playful way to knit that lets you easily create a beautiful effect. This stitch involves both knit and purl stitches. Would you like to learn the best way to get started with the barleycorn stitch? Then check out our instructional video: Knitting the Barleycorn Stitch. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can knit some truly wonderful scarves. You can download the free Knitting Pattern for the Twist Cowl for free from our online store. For the Twist Cowl, we used the following yarn: Rico Creative Twist Super Chunky.
Free Knitting Pattern: Carzato Nuovo Shawl
This trendy shawl is a nice change from the usual knitted scarves. With our Free Knitting Pattern, you can easily make this shawl yourself. All you need to make this winter must-have is a set of 15mm Knitting Needles and four balls of Lana Grossa Nuovo. You’ll have this fantastic shawl finished in no time. Lana Grossa Nuovo yarn is no longer available. A good alternative you can use is Lang Yarns Ario.
Knitting a scarf with your arms—it's possible!
Some people call “arm knitting” the new knitting. But what exactly is arm knitting? Arm knitting—also known as arm-knitting—is essentially the same as knitting with a very loose stitch. However, instead of Knitting Needles, you use your own arms. Fun, right? Here at Yarnplaza, we also set aside our Knitting Needles and gave arm knitting a try back then. Arm knitting is suitable for both beginners and advanced knitters. In our blog post, “Arm Knitting,” you’ll find a complete step-by-step guide to this arm-knitting technique. Did you know that with arm knitting, you can knit a scarf in just half an hour? It’s perfect for the impatient knitters among us. In our online store, you can download the Free Knitting Pattern for this amazing cowl.
What kinds of wool and yarns are suitable for knitting a scarf?
Good news! Virtually all types of wool and yarn are suitable for knitting a scarf. The most important thing is that it knits up smoothly. When choosing your wool or yarn, it’s best to consider the materials and how thick you want the scarf to be. Some people think that a wool scarf is incredibly itchy, but nothing could be further from the truth. Whether wool is itchy depends largely on its composition. Are you worried that if you knit a scarf yourself, it will be itchy? If so, choose merino wool, Cashmere, or Acrylic/Synthetic Yarns.
At Yarnplaza, we’ve noticed that the following wools and yarns are particularly popular for knitting your own scarves or hats. Of course, our knitters are always happy to test out the new wools and yarns. Still, we’re always curious to hear about your experiences. Have you ever knitted something with one of the yarns listed below? Share your experiences and insights by leaving a comment on this page.
