When you look at this gauge swatch, do you think it was knitted or crocheted? You’ve probably already caught a glimpse of a word or two from this blog here and there, and that might have put you on the right track. This swatch was actually crocheted using a knitting stitch.
How do you crochet the knit stitch?
The knit stitch is also known as the knitting stitch, the waistcoat stitch, or the deep single crochet stitch. Using this stitch gives your crochet project the look of a knitted stockinette stitch. The crochet fabric is flexible yet strong, making it perfect for a bag, for example.
The knit stitch is actually a single crochet, but the way you stitch is different. Unlike with a regular single crochet, you don’t stitch under the little “V” on top; instead, you stitch from the front through the center of the “V.” It might sound complicated, but if you take your time watching the video below, I’m sure it will become clear to you.

What can you crochet with the knit stitch?
There are a few dos and don’ts associated with the crochet knit stitch. For example, you can really only use this crochet stitch when crocheting in the round. If you crochet back and forth, the stitches won’t line up neatly, and the knitted look will be lost. Also, you need to crochet the knit stitch in a chain stitch. If you crochet tightly, use a larger hook than recommended to keep your work supple and make it easier to insert the hook.
So what are some great projects to crochet using the knit stitch? Think of a little basket for your bathroom or a plant basket for the monstera in your living room. For the warmer months, a festival bag, or a cowl for when it gets cold.
