Stitch of the Month: Knit the Loop Stitch

Welcome to another “Stitch of the Month.” It’s already July—this year is flying by! This month, we’ve got another fun stitch for you, of course—this time, a fluffy, unique stitch to knit. In this blog post, you’ll learn everything there is to know about the loop stitch. Read on for all the details and, of course, the tutorial!

What is the loop stitch?

The loop stitch, also known as the fur stitch, is a knitting technique that gives the fabric a soft and fluffy look. It creates a texture that resembles small loops or buttons on the surface of the knitted fabric. With the loop stitch, you can add interesting texture and dimension to your knitting. It’s a fun technique to try if you’re looking for a playful and fluffy effect in your knitting projects.

What can you knit using the loop stitch?

This stitch is often used for making scarves, blankets, cushions, and other projects where a fuzzy look is desired. In addition to these decorative items, this stitch is also great for experimenting with sweaters, cardigans, or even cuddly toys! In clothing, the stitch adds a unique touch to your garment, and if you knit a cuddly toy using the loop stitch, it will have an extra fluffy and cuddly look. Here’s another idea if you want to knit something using the loop stitch: The loops and texture look a bit like a bath mat! The loop stitch makes it feel nice and fluffy under your feet.

How do you knit the loop stitch?

The loop stitch may take some practice to master. It’s important to wrap the thread tightly around the needle to ensure the loops stay in place. Also, experiment with different types of yarn to see which effect you like best (a thinner thread is recommended for beginners). We used Yarn and Colors Happy ourselves.

Of course, we have another clear video tutorial and a written pattern. Grab your Knitting Needles! Then let's get started with the loop stitch!

Knit a Loop Stitch Pattern

Tools & Supplies:
- Yarn: Yarn and Colors Happy in the color Denim
- 5.5 mm Knitting Needle

Needle 1: purl all stitches

Needle 2: Knit all stitches as follows: Insert the needle into the stitch (as if to knit), but do not let the stitch slide off your left needle. Now bring the yarn between the needles to the front, wrap it once around your left thumb, and then bring the yarn back between the needles behind the work. Now knit the stitch on your left needle (you may remove your thumb from the loop) and pass the stitch over the stitch on your right needle. This will secure the loop.
