Over the past year, many craft beginners have discovered crochet hooks and Knitting Needles. And we love seeing and hearing about it! Especially for all beginner knitters, we’re highlighting the moss stitch this month. It’s the perfect “next step” once you’ve mastered the basic stitches.
The moss stitch consists of a pattern of knit and purl stitches. The texture it creates is very sturdy, yet stretchy at the same time. The bold, substantial look of this stitch makes the pattern ideal for knitting home decor items, (men’s) sweaters, and accessories such as scarves, hats, and headbands. Or household items, such as pot holders and dish towels.
Before we get started with the free pattern and video tutorial for the moss stitch, let’s talk briefly about the name. The moss stitch actually has quite a few other names. For example, this stitch is also known as the double barleycorn and the double moss stitch. And if you use that last name, you’ll probably be more familiar with the single moss stitch as the seed stitch. Confusing, isn’t it? If the moss stitch appears in your Knitting Pattern, be sure to read the instructions for the stitch carefully.
