Katia City is the perfect yarn for beginner knitters. Made of 53% wool and 47% Acrylic, it’s easy to work with, and thanks to its fun mottled effect, you don’t have to keep track of the color changes yourself. This makes it ideal for creating cheerful scarves, cozy hats, and, of course, the most beautiful cardigans!
Sizes: 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52
Material:
- Katia City 3, 4, 4, 4 balls - Unfortunately, Katia City is no longer available. Use a substitute yarn such as Katia Azteca or DMC Pirouette. Always knit a gauge swatch first when substituting yarn, and adjust the pattern as needed by knitting one size smaller or larger.
- 5.5 and 6.5 mm Knitting Needles
- 6 buttons
Stitches used:
- Ribbing 1x1
- Stockinette stitch (st)
- Ribbing in tubular stitch: 1st row: *K1, bring the yarn to the front of the work, slip 1 stitch off the right needle without knitting it (= insert the needle as if to knit this stitch), bring the yarn to the back of the work*, repeat from * to *. Repeat this row throughout.
- Round buttonholes: On the right side of the work, on a needle: Place a yarn over on the right needle and knit the next 2 stitches together. On the next row, on the wrong side of the work: knit the stitches and the yarn over as they appear.
Gauge swatch:
Measured after gently ironing. Knit in garter stitch on size 5.5 needles
10 x 10 cm = 14 sts and 20 rows.
Katia City Cardigan Knitting Pattern:
Back panel
Using size 6.5 needles, cast on 64, 72, 78, or 84 stitches. Knit 6 rows of ribbing in tubular stitch, then switch to size 5.5 needles and continue in stockinette stitch.
Sleeve insertion:
When the total length reaches 40 cm, decrease at the beginning of each row on both sides:
1 set of 3 sts, 1 set of 2 sts, 2 sets of 1 st
1 set of 3 sts, 1 set of 2 sts, 3 sets of 1 st
1 set of 3 sts, 1 set of 2 sts, 4 sets of 1 st
1 set of 3 sts, 1 set of 2 sts, 5 sets of 1 st

Shoulders:
When the total length reaches 19, 20, 21, or 22 cm—measured from the start of the sleeve sets—decrease on both sides at the beginning of each row:

1 set of 7, 2 sets of 4
1 set of 8 sts, 1 set of 5 sts, 1 set of 4 sts
Neck:
When the total length reaches 22, 23, 24, or 25 cm (measured from the start of the sleeve sets), bind off the remaining 24, 28, 30, or 30 sts.
Right front panel:
Using size 6.5 needles, cast on 32, 36, 38, 42 sts. Knit 6 rows of ribbing in tubular stitch, then switch to size 5.5 needles and continue in stockinette stitch.
Sleeve insert:
When the total length reaches 40 cm, bind off at the left end at the beginning of each row on the wrong side of the work:

Shoulder:

Left front panel:
Knit as for the right front panel, but in mirror image.
Sleeves:
Using needles sizes 6.5, 32, 34, 38, and 40, cast on 32 stitches. Knit 6 rows in tubular ribbing, then switch to needle size 5.5 and continue in stockinette stitch.
When the total length reaches 8 cm, increase on both sides (= 1 st from each side) on every 8th row: 8 times. There will then be 48, 50, 53, or 56 sts.
Sleeve cuff:
When the total length reaches 45 cm, decrease at the beginning of each row on both sides:
2 times 2 sts, 8 times 1 st, 3 times 2 sts
2 times 2 sts, 9 times 1 st, 3 times 2 sts
2 times 2 sts, 10 times 1 st, 3 times 2 sts
2 times 2 sts, 11 times 1 st, 3 times 2 sts
When the total length reaches 13, 14, 15, and 16 cm—measuring from the start of the sleeve cap—decrease the remaining 12, 12, 14, and 14 stitches. Knit the other sleeve the same way.
Finishing:
Sew the facing pieces together and press gently with steam. Close the shoulder seams.
Collar:
Using size 5.5 needles, pick up all stitches around the neckline, increase or decrease as needed throughout the first row to reach a total of 66, 74, 80, or 83 stitches. Knit 6 rows in ribbing, then bind off all stitches.
Closure on the right front panel:
Using size 5.5 needles, pick up stitches along the closure edge of the right front = from the bottom to the end of the collar: 113, 115, 117, 119 sts. Knit in ribbing.
Buttonholes:
On the 3rd row, work 6 buttonholes as follows:
3 sts, 1 buttonhole, *19 sts, 1 buttonhole*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, and end the row with 3 sts.
4 sts, 1 buttonhole, *19 sts, 1 buttonhole*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, and end the row with 4 sts.
5 sts, 1 buttonhole, *19 sts, 1 buttonhole*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, and end the row with 5 sts.
6 sts, 1 buttonhole, *19 sts, 1 buttonhole*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, and end the row with 6 sts.
Knit 3 more rows, then bind off all stitches. Knit the left front placket the same way, but without buttonholes, and sew the buttons onto it. Attach the sleeve cap—with the center of the top of the sleeve—to the shoulder seam, and the ends to the beginning of the sleeve sets on the back and front pieces. Sew in place. Close the seams on the sides and bottoms of the sleeves.
