Knitting Pattern for a Cardigan
Back: Cast on 72 (78/84) sts using size 7 needles, then work in pattern sequence using size 8 needles, starting with 1 row of purl stitches. For the slanted side edges, decrease 1 st on each side every 2nd row 16 times. Increase = 104 (110/116) sts. When the total height reaches 28 cm = after 41 rows from the cast-on, continue working in the cable pattern. When the total height reaches 39 (41/43) cm, for the shoulders, decrease 2 sts once, then in every 2nd row, decrease 8 times 2 sts on each side. And place the remaining 68 (74/80) sts on hold (the middle 26 sts form the neckline and 21 (24/27) sts on each side form the shoulders).
Left front panel: Cast on 39 (43/47) sts with size 7 needles, then work in pattern sequence using size 8 needles, starting with 1 st on the needle and working double edge sts along the closing edge. For the side taper on the right edge, increase 1 single crochet 16 times = 55 (59/63) single crochets. When the total height reaches 28 cm = after 41 rows from the cast-on, continue working in the cable pattern. When the total height reaches 39 (41/43) cm, for the shoulder slope on the right edge, decrease 1x2 sts., then decrease 8x2 sts. in every 2nd row and bind off 1x21 (24/27) sts. When the total height reaches 42 (44/46) cm, for the neckline on the left edge, bind off 1x12 (13/14) sts., then in every 2nd row, decrease 1 st 4 times.
Front right panel:
Knit the left front piece in mirror image.

Finishing:
Using the 39 (42/45) stitches held for the shoulders, knit 1 row in stockinette stitch. Sew the shoulder seams closed. To do this, place the stitches from both shoulders onto a single needle, lay the needles one on top of the other with the wrong sides together, and knit 1 stitch from one needle together with 1 stitch from the other needle, then bind off. On both sides: From the 26 held stitches of the back neckline and 25 stitches each from the necklines of both front pieces, pick up stitches onto Circular Knitting Needle size 7 = 76 stitches, and knit 5 rows in garter stitch, working double edge stitches along the closure edge on each row. Bind off the stitches. Pick up 36 (41/46) stitches from each armhole edge using the Circular Knitting Needle size 7 and knit 5 rows in garter stitch. Bind off. Sew the sleeve and side seams closed.
