Knitting Pattern for a Poncho Top
Back and front panels
It is knitted in two pieces and begins in the center of the back or front.
Cast on 80, 81, 83, 84, 86 stitches using size 6.5 needles, and place a Stitch Marker between the 32nd stitch on the right (=neck) and the 48th, 49th, 51st, 52nd, 54th stitch on the left (=center seam).
Knit 3 cm in garter stitch (8 rows = 4 garter stitches), then continue in stockinette stitch using size 7 needles. Bind off at 28 cm (58 rows), 29.5 cm (62 rows), 31.5 cm (66 rows), 33.5 cm (70 rows), 36.5 cm (76 rows) in height after the garter stitch, loosely bind off the stitches, and place a Stitch Marker between the 37th, 38th, 40th, 41st, and 43rd knit stitches (=armhole) and the 43rd purl stitch (=side seam).
Knit a second piece in mirror image for the back.
Knit 1 section as is and 1 section in mirror image for the front.
Finish:
Close the seam in the center of the back piece by joining the two pieces together at the 48th, 49th, 51st, 52nd, and 54th stitches marked at the beginning.
Do the same with the two pieces of the front panel.
Close the shoulder seams. Close the side seams at the 43 marked stitches.
Create fringes along the edge of the side seams and in the armholes as follows:
Cut 3 strands of yarn, each 55 cm long; fold them in half; using a Crochet Hook, thread them through the space between the two stitches; pull the ends through the loop and tighten.
Place 1 fringe on the shoulder seams and the others at equal intervals—approximately every 2 stitches—and fasten them evenly at 25 cm.
Make two strings, each consisting of two strands of two threads, 70 cm long; sew them in place at the shoulder seams and tie them in a bow at the back to provide support.
