Macramé Lamp - Free Pattern

Macramé is trendy, and you can use it to make beautiful creations. We’re going to make a macramé lamp that will bring a summery, bohemian vibe into your home (or garden). This macramé lamp adds a lot of character to your interior and is also fun to make! Curious about the pattern? Then keep reading.

Our creative designer Monique has made a beautiful macramé lamp. Macramé is a craft technique that involves knotting different strands of cord. There are several different knots used in macramé. One of these is the half-weave knot, which was also used to make this macramé lamp. Monique made the lamp in black (02) and green (83) using DMC Natura XL yarn. The lamp consists of three rings and is decorated with wooden beads, which creates a playful effect. In which color will you make this charming eye-catcher?

With this beautiful macramé lamp, the decorating possibilities are endless. For example, if you have a high ceiling, it looks great to hang several of them in the same color (such as black or white). This instantly fills that empty space with warmth and charm. You can also add a light bulb so the macramé lamp serves as mood lighting. In the evening, the “open” pattern creates beautiful shadows on your wall. Plus, macramé lamps are also great for outdoor use! For example, under the porch to create a bohemian vibe. Or make the lamp in a cheerful color—like pink (40), yellow (09), or blue (70)—for the kids’ room! So there are plenty of ideas. How are you going to decorate your lamp?

Half-weave knot: You use 3 or more threads (4 threads in the pattern). The tension thread (the middle threads) must be pulled tight in the center. Loop the left thread over the tension thread. Next, loop the right thread over the left thread to form a sort of “4.” Then pull the right thread under the tension thread and pull it tight.

TIP: Watch the video below for a clear explanation of the pattern. Monique walks you through, step by step, how to make this beautiful macramé lamp.

First, crochet the rings using a size 6 Crochet Hook. For the 10-cm ring, crochet about 50 single crochets. For the 15-cm ring, crochet about 80 single crochets, and for the 30-cm ring, crochet about 150 single crochets. Next, cut 40 strands of yarn, each 3.20 m long. Start with the 15-cm ring; it’s helpful to secure the ring at 4 points with an extra strand of yarn and hang it up. Fold the strands in half and tie them in a loop around the ring, distributing the strands evenly around the ring.

Tying
the Knot
: We’ll tie the half-weaver’s knot, using 4 threads at a time. Use the middle 2 threads to wrap around the left and right threads.
Take your left strand and place it over the two middle strands; then take your right strand and place it over your left strand. Now bring the right strand behind the two middle strands and pull it from back to front between the left strand and the two middle strands. Tighten the strands (not too tightly). Continue this way all the way around the ring. The first round is complete.

Tie the next 6 rounds in the same way, but stagger the buttons. For these rounds, pull each button all the way to the top (not too tight). Meanwhile, make sure the rounds you tie remain horizontal; otherwise, your lamp will end up crooked. Starting with row 8, tie each row slightly looser through row 17.

First, slide the beads over every other wire (the middle two wires around which you tied the previous knot). Now take your 30 cm ring and secure it with one half-weita knot (make sure your beads are above the ring). The next button goes directly opposite the first button, and after that, make two more buttons between these two buttons. This divides the ring neatly into four sections and leaves your hands free to make the rest of the buttons. If your ring isn’t quite straight yet, you can straighten it out completely once you’ve finished this round by gently adjusting your buttons. The section above the ring is about 30 cm.

Following the same method as above, work 9 more rounds below the ring, then tie the half-weight knot over those 9 rounds, starting with chain stitches and tightening as you go (the opposite of the top side). Take your last ring and first secure it in the same way as the middle ring, then tie off your last threads.

Finishing touch
You can leave the lamp as is and let the wires hang loose at the bottom, trimming them to the desired length if necessary. Another option is to tie all the wires together. To do this, wrap a wire around the top of the loose strands so that you get a nice tassel underneath the lamp. Next, trim this to the length you like best. To make this creation even more atmospheric, you can place a (mood) light inside it. And now… enjoy!

We're really excited to see your macramé lamp and how you'll decorate it. Send a photo of it to info@yarnplaza.com or share your creation with #yarnplaza on Facebook and Instagram.
