How to Make a Macramé Plant Hanger

Macramé is a popular technique for tying the cutest accessories! With this technique, you combine different threads with different buttons, allowing for endless variations. You can work in two dimensions, like when making a wall hanging, or in 3D, like this plant hanger.

This plant hanger is made from Hoooked Natural Jute, a rope-like yarn that’s ideal for macramé. The stiff thread keeps your knots secure, and its rugged appearance gives your projects a cool, industrial look.

Macramé Plant Hanger Pattern:

  • Cut 5 strands of 3 m and 1 strand of 3.5 m
  • Place all 6 strands side by side and fold them in half at the center. Tie the strands together using the longest strand to create a loop from which you can hang the ornament. Use the 3.5-meter strand to tie them together: Wrap it around 9 times, and secure it by threading the end through the previous loop on the final wrap.
  • Make 3 bundles of rope, each consisting of four strands. Take one of the bundles and start tying the twisted weita knot. Continue tying until you have a 10-cm-long piece (in our case, this is 15 knots). Repeat this process with the other two bundles.
  • Skip 10 cm. Make new bundles of 4 strands (using 2 strands from one group and 2 strands from the other group) and tie a bowline knot. Repeat this for the other bundles as well. Josephine Knot macramé

  • Skip 30 cm, make a new bundle of 4 strands (2 strands from one group and 2 strands from the other group), and tie a Josephine Knot. Repeat this for the other bundles as well.
  • Skip 8 cm and use new bundles of string (2 strands from one group and 2 strands from the other group) to tie a bowline knot.
  • Skip 8 cm and tie the ropes together using the longest thread by wrapping it around them and securing it.
  • You can unravel and trim the loose threads as you see fit.
