The thickness largely determines the look, but also the sturdiness—the latter being important for heavier projects. For example, for interior projects like plant hangers, we recommend using macramé yarn ranging from 6 to 15 mm. You’ll also get the best results for a wall hanging with a thickness of 6 to 15 mm. Want to get started on a delicate accessory like a bracelet or Keychain? Then choose a finer macramé yarn with a thickness of 3 mm to 5 mm. Are you going for a rugged look with a thicker macramé yarn? Or do you prefer a more subtle look and opt for a 3 mm yarn? Determining the Length of the Macramé Yarn
How long your macramé cord needs to be depends on the length of your project, the thickness of the cord, and the number of knots you make. To make sure you have enough yarn, use at least 3.5 times the length of your project. If you’re using thicker macramé cord, cut strands that are at least 5 times the length of your project. This is because thicker macramé cord runs out faster than thinner macramé yarn. You’ll also need longer strands for projects with lots of knots—such as a wall hanging or a bag—than you would for, say, a wall hanging with few buttons.
