Macramé Cord Selection Guide: Which macramé cord should you choose for your next project?

We’re often asked which cord is best for macramé. Yarnplaza, of course, offers a selection of macramé yarns. Now that macramé is so popular, you can sometimes find macramé cord at Action or Hema as well. But how do you know which macramé yarn is right for your project? Read more about the options here.

With macramé, you can easily make fun Home Accessories, such as wall hangings and plant hangers. You tie the strands of macramé cord together to create a pattern. It’s easy to learn, and your project will be finished in no time. Will you give macramé a try today?

Types of macramé cord: The thickness of the macramé cord determines the look of your macramé project

The choice of rope type determines the look of your project. The most common thicknesses are 3, 4, 5, or 6 millimeters, but macramé rope ranging from 6.5 to 10 mm is also available. The thickness largely determines the look, but also the sturdiness—the latter being important for heavier projects. For example, for interior projects like plant hangers, we recommend using macramé yarn ranging from 6 to 15 mm. You’ll also get the best results for a wall hanging with a thickness of 6 to 15 mm. Want to get started on a delicate accessory like a bracelet or Keychain? Then choose a finer macramé yarn with a thickness of 3 mm to 5 mm. Are you going for a rugged look with a thicker macramé yarn? Or do you prefer a more subtle look and opt for a 3 mm yarn? The more detail you want in your project, the thinner the yarn you should use.

What will your next project be? Below are some beautiful macramé projects.

Are you looking for a thicker macramé cord? There’s plenty to choose from there, too. For example, try Durable Rope, a lovely, Chunky cord that’s perfect for larger projects. Or go for the thick, twisted version of Rico Creative Cotton Cord.

Katia also has two thicker macramé cords in her collection. First is the Katia Macramé Cord, a durable yarn made of 65% Cotton, 25% polyester, and 10% other fibers. This is an ideal mix for macramé cord, resulting in a thick and sturdy yarn. Katia also has a soft macramé yarn in her collection. Most macramé cords are coarse and sturdy, but Katia Soft Macramé adds a soft touch to your project.

Determining the Length of the Macramé Yarn

How long your macramé cord needs to be depends on the length of your project, the thickness of the cord, and the number of knots you make. To make sure you have enough yarn, use at least 3.5 times the length of your project. If you’re using thicker macramé cord, cut strands that are at least 5 times the length of your project. This is because thicker macramé cord runs out faster than thinner macramé yarn. You’ll also need longer strands for projects with lots of knots—such as a wall hanging or a bag—than you would for, say, a wall hanging with few buttons.

Macramé Kits

Is this your first time trying macramé? Then go for a macramé kit. That way, you’ll have everything you need in one place: the macramé yarn and the pattern. For beginners, this feather pattern is highly recommended. Or make a cute wall hanging using a thicker macramé cord. It’ll be an eye-catcher in your home!
