Brighten up your world with pom-poms. These fluffy little balls are easy to make, and you can do just about anything with them. Use them as a playful accent on your cozy, warm winter hat or on a poncho, for example. Or add them as a cheerful touch to Home Accessories. Our designer Monique even made a chandelier out of pom-poms. If you have some wool at home, that’s really all you need. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
For me—and I think for many others as well—it was my first introduction to crafts. In elementary school, just before Easter, we were allowed to make a fluffy pompom that eventually turned into a chick. Full of enthusiasm, we set to work with yarn and cardboard during arts and crafts class. They weren’t the prettiest spring chicks, but who cared?
Fashion (accessories) with pom-poms
Those crafts were, of course, absolutely adorable. But you can also incorporate pom-poms into adult projects. You see them most often on winter hats—all-time favorites during the winter months. Knit this classic yourself with the Wooladdict Savage Saffron Hat Knitting Kit. And you’ll find pom-poms not just on hats, but also on sweaters, for example. Or on ponchos, like this kids’ poncho in vibrant colors. Pom-poms are always a hit on bags, too. They bounce along cheerfully and keep the straps neatly in place, as with the Catania pouch bag.

Home Accessories with Pom-Poms
Now, here are the cutest pom-pom accessories for your home. Our favorite has to be the spring-inspired flower wreath. With this wreath, you can enjoy the most beautiful flowers in your home all year round. The Homedeco Crochet Kit also features a pom-pom. With this kit, you can give your interior a trendy makeover—whether you’re going for a Scandinavian, industrial, or Bohemian look. Have you caught the bug and have plenty of leftover wool and yarn? In a previous blog post, Monique explained how to make a colorful chandelier out of pom-poms.

Here's how to make pom-poms
Get your yarn ready, because here’s the step-by-step guide to making the most beautiful pom-poms. Of course, you can go the “old-school” route and use cardboard. Stack two cardboard rings on top of each other and wrap the yarn around them until the inner hole is completely filled. Done? Then use a pair of scissors to cut the yarn between the two cardboard rings. Tie the loose yarn together with a thread by pulling it through the cardboard rings. Single crochet a tight knot, remove the rings, and your pom-pom is ready.
But the fastest and best way to make pom-poms is definitely with a pom-pom maker. The Clover brand offers pom-pom makers in sizes XS, S, L, and XL. The pom-pom maker comes with instructions, but if you’re more of a visual learner, you can also find helpful instructional videos on YouTube showing how to use these pom-pom makers.
Are you wondering if your leftover yarn is good enough to make a nice pom-pom? Our expert Monique explained that you can actually make a pom-pom with just about any type of yarn. It’s best to use wool, though, because it gives a nice, fluffy result.
What do you create with your pom-pom maker?
Feeling inspired? Then get started winding yarn and other types of yarn. If you practice hard and earn the title of “pompom expert,” you can even conjure up cute little animals like pandas and bunnies from your pompom maker. We’d love to see your pompom creations on our Facebook page or on Instagram using #Yarnplaza.
