Spring & Summer 2020 Trends

It’s time to wake up from your winter hibernation! The new collections for spring and summer 2020 have been unveiled, so we can tell you all about the color and material trends for 2020. Get ready, because the colors are bursting off the pages of magazines and from the skeins of yarn.

Magazines from Katia, Lana Grossa, Phildar, Rico, and others are once again full of inspiration for fashion and home accessories. They feature yarns in striking colors or, conversely, with striking textures. That’s exactly what you’ll see throughout all the Spring/Summer 2020 collections: the focus is either on colors (or a mix of colors) or on texture.

Spring/Summer 2020 Trends: Eye-Catching Textures

First, let’s talk about those eye-catching textures. Ribbon yarn is making a full comeback. That’s great news, because this yarn lets you create wonderfully light and airy garments. Its flat texture gives your knitting a slightly irregular look. Our top picks: Rico Bändchen and Lana Grossa Certo.

In addition, we’re also seeing a lot of light and voluminous cotton yarns (such as Phildar Phil Pima), as well as yarns with a “wintery” look but a summery feel against the skin (such as Lana Grossa About Berlin Funky, Lang Yarns Wooladdicts Liberty, Phildar Phil Baby Doll, and Rico Creative So Cool + So Soft Chunky Cotton).

When it comes to stitches, the focus in the summer is, of course, on airy textures. The ajour pattern, in particular, appears strikingly often in the new designs. In addition, garter stitch, cable stitches, ribbing, simple stockinette stitch, and the “lazy woman’s stitch” remain popular.

The Trend Colors for Spring/Summer 2020

The fashion colors for Spring/Summer 2020 are hard to sum up in a single word. On the one hand, you have those gorgeous, vibrant colors that really pop. Think Coral and royal blue. But nude and powdery shades are also trending right now. In particular, the colors of the ocean and the hues of a sunset seem to be a source of inspiration for the trendsetters of 2020.

With yarns that feature more color effects, you’ll often see a base yarn used—a smooth strand with minimal twist or textural effects, such as warp yarn. Let yourself be tempted by yarns with a soft color gradient or ombre effects in pastel shades, such as Lana Grossa Romanza or Phildar Phil Degrade. Lana Grossa Tropico, Katia Veganette, and Rico Fashion Cotton Light & Long Tweed DK are yarns with more dramatic color gradients that are sometimes even combined with spray or tweed effects. And then, of course, there are the real showstoppers, such as Lana Grossa’s Gomitilo line, Katia Neon, or Rico Creative Lazy Hazy Summer Cotton DK.

The Best Trend of 2020: Sustainability

An important theme that’s even more in the spotlight this year is Sustainability—something we at Yarnplaza can and want to encourage. Many yarn brands are exploring different ways to make their yarns more sustainable. This includes using alternative materials, such as Tencel and Viscose made from plant-based fibers. Sustainable yarns are also receiving increasing attention in the magazines published by various yarn brands. The designs promoted using these yarns often have a simple, understated look to emphasize their sustainable, natural character.

Spring/Summer 2020 Trends: New Magazines and Models

Of course, we spent plenty of time leafing through the new magazines from all the well-known yarn brands. If only it were summer already—because seeing so many cute clothing and accessory designs instantly makes us long for those warm, balmy summer days.

Of course, the new yarn varieties get special attention in the magazines. But new designs have also been created using the familiar, popular basic yarns, with each brand staying true to its own style. For example, Rico offers genuine fashion items. Phildar has always been strong in its baby and children’s collection. And Lana Grossa is once again capitalizing on the trend for accessories with Gomitolo Magazine. If you’re looking for classic designs, Katia Concept and Lang Yarns are the places to go.

New yarns, magazines, and kits

Let's take a look at everything. Below, you'll find the new magazines and yarns for each brand.

Lana Grossa

At Lana Grossa, we mainly see Gradient Yarns in striking colors and pastel shades, or Yarns that have a more subdued color palette but stand out because of their playful texture. Here and there, these elements are combined—for example, through a color gradient with a spray print or a ribbon yarn with a print.

  • Sustainable designs in Filati Linea Pura No. 13. A magazine packed with simple designs that exude luxury.
    • Yarns commonly used in this magazine: high-quality cotton such as Certo ribbon yarn and Romanza Gradient Yarn, which is a blend of cotton, linen, and Viscose.
    • Kit Highlight: Romanza Sweater Knitting Kit
  • Filati Journal No. 59 & Lookbook No. 8: In these magazines, you’ll find must-have fashion items that make a statement. Lookbook No. 8 focuses on spring pieces, including sweaters and cardigans for the transitional season. Filati Journal No. 59 features summer fashion, including lightweight tops made from fine yarns.

Lang Yarns

Phildar

Phildar has been praised for years for its cheerful clothing designs for babies and children. And this year is no exception. Although the designs are characterized by simplicity, they do stand out thanks to their use of color or textured stitches. We see a bit more boldness in the color palette of the women’s designs. For example, through the use of yarns with a gradient effect or even by combining different yarns in a single design. Just like the kidswear, the designs are simple yet stylish.

In addition, Phildar is focusing on a sustainable collection. Phildar No. 701 is entirely dedicated to this theme and features designs for the whole family made with the eco-friendly yarns Phil Ecocoton and Phil Ecojeans.

  • Phildar releases numerous magazines every season, featuring patterns for the whole family or exclusively for women, children, or babies. In addition to the magazine mentioned above, the following issues are must-haves: Phildar No. 700 (babies), Phildar No. 184 (kids ages 1 to 4), Phildar No. 187 (kids ages 2 to 12), Phildar No. 183 (women)
  • Yarns frequently featured in the magazines: baby and kidswear is often designed using Phil Baby Doll, Phil Love Cotton, and Phil Pima yarns, in soft pastel and natural shades. For women’s styles, the designs are primarily based on the core collection, which has been expanded to include a few new trendy colors.
  • Kit Highlight: Phil Love Cotton Kids' Poncho Knitting Kit

Katia

Katia offers many seasonal yarns with color gradients. For example, for making a shawl. Think of Katia Maldivas (8), Katia Neon (9), Katia Jaipur Soft, and Katia Harmonia (10).

  • Katia Concept No. 9: This magazine builds on the sustainable concept using high-quality yarns in natural shades. It features lots of summery tops and lightweight sweaters—airy looks to wear all summer long.
  • Katia Casual No. 103: In Katia Casual, you'll find trendy styles to wear when you're heading to the beach for the day or if you're looking for a more laid-back look.
  • Katia Kids No. 93: timeless children's fashion for kids ages 2 to 12.
