Winter Yarns 2020/2021

Brrr… it’s so cold! We’ve entered the season of biting winds, heavy downpours, and nights with temperatures dropping lower and lower below zero. It’s winter, and we’re all hoping for a truly wintry scene where the heath and rooftops are covered in a thick layer of snow. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet, but we did our best over the Christmas break to grow an extra-thick coat and treat ourselves to lots of goodies. Christmas dinner, New Year’s Eve, and every day in between—we really treated ourselves! And now that the festivities are over and we’ve made our New Year’s resolutions, it’s time to get back on track and dive into all those fun, creative projects waiting for us. That’s why, in this blog post, we’re bringing you up to speed on the 2020/2021 Winter Yarns! :)

Wool

When we talk about warm sweaters, cardigans, and scarves, wool is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Wool has the fantastic property of being able to regulate heat. This means that wool retains heat when needed and releases it when you’re warm enough. Ideal!

When it comes to wool, the origin of the yarn can vary. If you go for mohair, you’re talking about silky-soft, lustrous wool that comes from (mostly) Angora goats. Merino Wool, on the other hand, comes from the Merino sheep—one of the strongest and oldest sheep breeds in the world. And alpaca wool… the name says it all. Alpaca wool is the fleece from the coat of an incredibly cute-looking alpaca. With the fluffy wool of an alpaca, you can knit beautiful, soft, warm, and lightweight sweaters that are a delight to the eye and feel pleasant against the skin.

Mohair

Many people consider mohair to be a luxurious yarn. That’s because the wool has a natural sheen and absorbs dye exceptionally well. This latter quality results in balls of wool with fantastic, vibrant colors that let you knit true eye-catchers that are definitely worth seeing. For example, try the Lana Grossa Silkhair Haze Dégradé—a wonderfully soft ball of mohair with a subtle color gradient. Would you like to make a cardigan or sweater for a festive occasion? Then the Mohair Luxe Lamé yarn from Lang Yarns is just the thing for you! This yarn has a glitter thread woven into it, giving your creations that extra special touch.

Does your mohair yarn not have to be 100% mohair? Then check out Katia Ingenua Moda! This yarn is 78% mohair, features a fantastic color gradient with the brightest colors and softest shades, and its fuzzy texture creates a playful and airy knit.

Are you trying to decide between mohair and merino? Then Lana Grossa Brigitte No. 3 is a great choice! Brigitte No. 3 is a soft, fluffy yarn made from a blend of mohair, Merino Wool, and Polyamide. And to top it off, this yarn comes in a wide range of beautiful Uni colors!

Merino

We also offer a variety of weights and colors of Merino Wool in our online store. You can get started with the fine Merino Yarns from Lang Yarns, such as Lang Yarns Neon and Wooladdicts Hope and Glory. Or check out the lovely skeins from Katia’s New Winter Collection, including the Merino Yarns Alma, Eden, Sky, and Yoga.

If you’re a fan of Lana Grossa’s yarns, be sure to check out the Landlust Winterwolle. And don’t forget to click over to the Lana Grossa Nuvoletta, because with this yarn you can make the coziest cardigans to snuggle up in. Nuvoletta is soft, fluffy, and incredibly light. “How is that possible?” you might be wondering. Let me tell you that the secret to Lana Grossa lies in the yarn’s composition. The Nuvoletta yarn is made of Merino Wool, baby alpaca wool, and a small amount of Polyamide. Curious about Nuvoletta’s warm, trendy colors? Click here!

Alpaca

Alpacas are just so cute! If you’d like to get started working with the fleece of this fluffy animal, pay close attention. I’d love to introduce you to some lovely skeins of alpaca wool from our collection. For example, Lana Grossa offers Brigitte No. 2—a soft and airy yarn that’s made of both alpaca wool and cotton. Brigitte No. 2 features a cotton mesh structure with air-spun wool fibers woven throughout. This creates a yarn that’s light, wonderfully soft, and feels almost like fleece. It’s the perfect yarn for warm winter sweaters, scarves, and cardigans!

Are you a big fan of DROPS? Then be sure to check out DROPS Alpaca, DROPS Andes, DROPS Nepal Uni Color, and DROPS Puna. Each one is a lovely yarn that lets you create beautiful alpaca wool projects. :)

Different yarn

You don’t have to use wool to create a cozy winter look. Katia has proven this with her new yarn, Soft Gratté. This Katia yarn has the look of luxurious mohair, but is actually 80% Acrylic and 20% Polyamide. That means you can knit a beautiful, long-haired cardigan without any itchiness!

You can also prepare for the cold, dark days with, for example, a lovely warm cowl made from Lang Yarns’ Grace yarn—a yarn made from 60% Silk and 40% Cashmere. Would you like to get started with Lang Yarns’ Grace yarn? Be sure to flip through the Lang Yarns Fatto a Mano No. 265 magazine for beautiful designs.
