Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Punch Needle to Punch Oliebol

Duration: It takes about 2 hours to use a punch needle to shape the oliebol.

What do you need?

- Yarnplaza Punch Stencil Holidays
- Embroidery Hoop, 15 cm
- Rico thin Punch Needle - 2.2 mm -
1 Yarn and Colors Must-have mini 100 Black
- 1 Yarn and Colors Must-have mini 002 Cream
- 1 skein of Yarn and Colors Must-have 026 Satay
- Lilian canvas fabric
- Prym Washable Iron-On Marker, Red (or pencil/fineliner)

Note: For this punch project, you'll be working on the back of your piece. When you're done, turn the fabric over so the loops are on the right side.

How do you use a punch needle to make an oliebol?

Step 1: Trace the pattern onto the fabric with the marker and stretch the fabric into the embroidery hoop.

Step 2: Thread your Punch Needle with black yarn and set the Punch Needle to position 9. Start with the small black parts of the oliebol: the currants, the eyes, and the mouth. When you're done, cut the yarn.

Step 3: Thread your punch needle with Satay and set the needle to position 6. First, punch the outline of the oliebollen and work inward from there. Be sure to leave some extra space at the top for the powdered sugar. You can flip your work over occasionally to check if it’s filled to your liking. When you reach the center, cut your thread and move on to the next step.

Step 4: Thread your Punch Needle with Cream and leave it on setting 6. Fill in the empty space at the top with this yarn to create an icing effect. It’s a good idea to work your way down, spacing the stitches further apart as you go; this creates a natural look. Use this color to use the punch needle on the eyes. Not enough powdered sugar? You can make a few extra rows at the top. Done? Cut the yarn.

Step 5: This step is optional. When you're done, turn your work over and check for any long, loose loops. You can tidy these up with a small (crochet) hook.

Step 6: You’ve now finished punching out the doughnut shape, so it’s time to finish the back. You can leave it in the embroidery hoop and finish it there, or you can turn it into a Christmas ornament. If you choose the latter, first secure the back with punch glue or fabric glue before cutting out the shape.

What to do with the oliebol?

You’ve now finished this super-cute oliebollen, but now comes the big question: what are you going to do with it? For example, we’d use it as a decoration for your New Year’s brunch or hang it on your wall on New Year’s Eve, but you could also turn them into double-sided Christmas ornaments! Just make sure to mirror the pattern once. Then you can glue the two doughnuts together and hang them on the Christmas tree. Fun!
