The Granny Square is an absolute classic in the world of crochet. They’re colorful, versatile, and a joy to make. But maybe you’ve been there: you’re crocheting a few squares, and suddenly one of them is lopsided, too loose, or has a weird hole in the middle. How do you prevent that? Here are the most important tips for a tight, even, and perfect Granny Square—every time. Keep reading for our tips!
1. Start with a magic ring
Most Granny Squares start in the center. Instead of a ring of chain stitches, it’s better to start with a magic ring. This allows you to pull the center of your square completely closed, which looks neater and is sturdier.
Our tip: Check out our tutorial: How to Crochet a Magic Ring. In this video tutorial, we’ll show you step by step how to crochet a magic ring. Practice this technique a few times on its own before you make your first square. It may seem tricky, but after a few tries, it’ll come naturally.
2. Consistent wire tension
It doesn't matter whether you crochet tightly or with a few chain stitches. Just make sure to crochet consistently. Uneven tension will cause your granny square to warp or look uneven.
Our tip: Hold your yarn the same way throughout the entire square. If you notice that you’re crocheting more tightly after a break, try making a Gauge swatch first.
3. Use a steady crocheting rhythm
Your granny square will turn out best if you maintain a steady pace. Make sure you’re sitting in a comfortable chair so you can adopt a relaxed posture. If you notice that you’re working too tensely, your granny square will naturally become tighter. Take a break, grab a refreshing drink, and do some hand exercises to relax your hands.
Our tip: Put on some soft music or crochet with a podcast playing in the background. It’ll help you get into a rhythm and crochet evenly. Or check out the Yarnplaza YouTube channel.
4. Count your stitches on every round
It may sound obvious, but: count your stitches. Especially as your granny square gets bigger, you might accidentally add an extra double crochet in a corner or forget one on the side.
Our tip: Mark the corners with a Stitch Marker; this will prevent confusion in the following rows. Check out our recommendations:

5. Block your squares for a professional result
Even if you crochet neatly, your granny square might curl or warp a little. Don't panic! Blocking (wetting it and using pins to shape it) is the key to a neat result.
Our tip: Place your square on a foam mat and pin down the corners and sides. Or pin your square to a block board. Use a plant sprayer to lightly mist the Granny Squares so they’re damp (not too wet!). Let them dry—and voilà: a perfect square. Check out our favorites:

6. Neatly tuck away any loose threads
Loose threads or threads sticking out halfway ruin the final result. Take the time to neatly sew the threads away with a darning needle.
Our tip: Always pull your ends through several stitches—preferably in a zigzag pattern—so they don’t come loose easily. It can also be helpful to tuck in your ends right away if you’re using a different color for each round. The number of ends you need to tuck in increases quickly when you’re crocheting a larger project. You don’t want to end up having to tuck in 50 or more ends at the end of your project.

7. Choose your color sequence wisely
A beautiful Granny Square stands or falls on its color. Choose several colors that go well together and alternate them in a logical order. Use contrasting shades for a vibrant effect, or stick to the same color family for a calmer look.
