Mochila crocheting is all the rage! With this technique, you can crochet the most beautiful creations in every color of the Rainbow. Think, for example, of a pretty crochet hook case, a cuddly Toy, or one of those popular Mochila bags. There’s also the Tapestry technique, which is very similar to Mochila crocheting. But what exactly is the difference? In this blog post, we’ll break down both techniques.
Tapestry vs. Mochila Crochet
Mochila crochet is often compared to tapestry crochet, but it’s actually quite different! The main difference is that with tapestry crochet, you work into two loops of each stitch, whereas with the mochila technique, you use the back loops. Also, the result with tapestry crochet is much stiffer than with mochila. Do you want a bag that feels more supple? Then use the mochila technique!
A major advantage of crocheting a mochila is that, unlike tapestry crochet, the stitches are placed directly one above the other. This gives you more options for patterns. Choose fun, bright colors or beautiful, muted shades and crochet your own favorite mochila bag!
Crocheting tapestry:
Crocheting tapestry involves the following steps:
- To make a single crochet, insert the hook under the two loops of the stitch.
- Wrap the yarn around your hook and pull it through the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull it through the two loops on your Crochet Hook.
- The strand you're not crocheting with lies across your stitches; you'll carry this strand along with your work, and it won't be visible.

Crocheting a backpack:
With the mochila technique, you crochet into the back loops and use the “yarn under” method. Because you crochet into the back loops, you get ridges on the front. Otherwise, just like with tapestry crochet, you simply work single crochets, except you wrap the yarn around the Crochet Hook differently. This is called “yarn under.”
Crocheting a backpack involves the following steps:
- Insert the hook into the back loop of your stitch.
- After inserting the hook into the back loop, do not wrap the yarn over the Crochet Hook; instead, keep the yarn under the Crochet Hook. Crochet the yarn from above.
- Pull the yarn through the stitch and crochet around your yarn again from the top.
What kinds of yarn do you use to crochet a mochila?
You can actually crochet a mochila with any type of yarn, but since you incorporate the threads into your crochet work, it’s best not to use yarns that are too thick. Choose Cotton yarns suitable for Needle Sizes 3 through 5.
We find the following yarns to be very suitable: Yarn and Colors Must-have, Phildar Phil Coton 3 & Phil Coton 4, SMC Catania, and Katia Capri.
