For this beginner’s hat, she used Rico’s Essentials Super Super Chunky yarn. It’s a wonderful winter yarn that’s also easy to work with. Perfect for the beginners among us!

What do you need to knit this hat?
- 1 ball of Rico Essentials Super Super Chunky or 2 balls of Durable Chunky
- 10 mm Circular Knitting Needles, 40 cm long, or 10 mm double-pointed needles with a 40 cm cable
- Stitch Markers
Hat Size
This pattern is based on a head circumference of 56 to 58 cm. Would you like the hat to be bigger or smaller? Then cast on more or fewer stitches, but always make sure to keep the number of stitches even.
Stitches Used
- 1/1 ribbing: knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, alternating between the two
- Stockinette stitch: knit all stitches
Easy Hat Knitting Pattern
Cast on 40 stitches using a 40-cm Circular Knitting Needle, size 10.
Needles 1–16: Knit in 1/1 ribbing. The piece now measures about 12 cm high and 16 cm wide. When you wear the Hat, it will become wider and shorter!
Needles 17–39: Work in stockinette stitch (knit all rows on the Circular Knitting Needle). The piece now measures 18 cm from the ribbing.
Needle 40: Before continuing, place a stitch marker on the first stitch on the needle. *Knit the first 2 stitches together, knit 2 stitches* Repeat from * to * until you reach the stitch marker again (30 stitches).
Needle 41: Before continuing, place a stitch marker on the first stitch on the needle.*Knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch* Repeat from * to * until you reach the stitch marker again (20 stitches).
Needle 42: Knit every 2 stitches together (10 stitches).
Needle 43: Knit every 2 stitches together (5 stitches). The piece now measures about 20 cm from the ribbing.
Pull the end thread through the 5 remaining stitches and pull the hole closed tightly. Use the leftover yarn to make a large pom-pom and sew it securely to the top of the hat. Neatly weave in the ends.
