Before You Start Sewing
Before you start sewing, it’s important to keep a few things in mind and to stock up on some sewing supplies and tools & supplies. Here are some helpful tips and tricks for beginners!
Invest in a good pair of fabric scissors
A good pair of fabric scissors is a must-have in your sewing collection. Our selection includes fabric scissors for right-handers and fabric scissors for left-handers, so there’s a pair to suit everyone! To make things a little easier, here are a few Tips:
Tip: Never cut anything other than fabric with your fabric scissors. Cutting other materials will dull the fabric scissors.
Tip 2: The thicker the fabric you want to cut, the larger the fabric scissors should be.
Tip 3: If you're going to quilt, you can also use a rotary cutter; there are different sizes of rotary cutter blades, and there are also replacement blades in case your rotary cutter gets dull!
Choose high-quality Sewing Thread
The Sewing Thread you use is, of course, also very important, so always choose high-quality Sewing Thread. You can find transparent Sewing Thread, polyester Sewing Thread, and handy sets in all kinds of colors. That way, you’ll have everything you need for any situation right at home! If you want to mend your jeans, there’s a set just for that! There are also polyester Sewing Threads and transparent Sewing Threads.

Use the right needles
Choose the right needles for your sewing machine. You should base your choice on the fabric you’ll be working with. For example, there are special sewing machine needles for denim and jeans fabrics, leather, stretch and jersey fabrics, and microtex fabrics. We also carry a wide selection of universal sewing machine needles. Our collection includes high-quality needles from Schmetz—be sure to check out our selection of sewing machine needles!
Tip: Match the Sewing Thread you'll be using to your sewing machine needle.

Get started with your sewing pattern!
Here are the basics you'll need before you start working with a sewing pattern:
- Pattern paper: You use this paper to trace patterns and cut out pattern pieces. It's handy if you often make your own clothes, for example!
- Tailor's chalk or a washable marker for making markings.
- A set of pins
and fabric clips
- Ruler
- measuring tape/centimeter
Made a mistake? Use a seam ripper to unpick the seams
Do you need to fix a seam, or did you make a mistake? A seam ripper helps you quickly and easily undo your seam without damaging the fabric.
