You’re moving, renovating, or the kids have moved out, and you have a spare room. What to do with that extra space? At our house, that’s when the wildest ideas pop up. Like a home theater. Or a massive walk-in closet. (Note: not because I have that many dresses or shoes, but just because it sounds so fun.) But of course, there are also very practical uses for an empty room like that. Like a laundry room where you can comfortably tackle those less-than-pleasant chores. The best idea? Turn it into a hobby room! A creative haven where you can pursue your favorite pastime in peace and quiet. For this blog, I asked around and scoured the internet, looking for the answer to the question, “What makes the perfect hobby room?”
1. The Best for Body and Mind
Crafting is relaxing for your mind. Knitting, crocheting, punch needle work, weaving, macramé… they all have a therapeutic effect and a positive impact on your mood and well-being. But let’s not forget our bodies, either. I don’t know about you, but when I have time to enjoy some crafts, I can’t just tear myself away. Time flies by, and before you know it, a few hours have gone by. That’s why it’s important that your work table is at the right height and that you have an ergonomic (office) chair to go with it. Your back, neck, and shoulders will thank you.
2. The Right Lighting
Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a hobby room with large windows, allowing you to enjoy plenty of natural light. Natural light is very pleasant and is easy on the eyes. But what if you don’t have that, or if you usually only have time to do crafts in the evening? That’s where Purelite lamps come in. At Yarnplaza, we carry five different lamps from this brand. They range from a large floor lamp to a magnifying lamp that provides highly focused lighting. Even if there’s no outlet nearby, you can use the wireless, rechargeable Purelite LED lamp to illuminate your work. Perfect for enjoying hours of your hobby!
3. Create enough storage space
Once you’ve been doing crafts for a while, your stash keeps growing. At first, you might have had just a few balls of yarn and some needles at home, but now the scraps and accessories are piling up. So having enough storage space is no luxury. It’s nice when your craft room has plenty of cabinet space with drawers and shelves, so you can keep everything neat and organized. For small haberdashery items like buttons, wool needles, and pins, sewing baskets are a godsend. If you’re always juggling multiple projects at once, take a look at our craft bags. These make it easy to keep the supplies for a single project all together.
4. If you don't have much space, you have to be resourceful
In some hobby rooms, you have to get creative not only with your yarns but also with the space. For those who simply don’t have enough room for cabinets, a pegboard is the perfect solution for all your loose accessories. The what? The pegboard. You know, one of those boards with holes that used to hang (or maybe still hangs) in the garage with all kinds of tools attached to it. These days, pegboards are more commonly found in homes than in garages, and they’re both practical and stylish. Just search for “Pegboard hobby room” on Pinterest and be amazed by the many great ideas.
5. Atmosphere & Decor
We’ve covered the ergonomic and practical aspects; now it’s time to add some ambiance to the room through color and decoration. Choose calming colors as a base. It’s also a good idea to add plants to your hobby room. Did you know that having green plants around can reduce your stress by up to 30%? “Feel Good” quotes are always a hit, too. It’s even more fun if they tie in with your hobby. You’ll find all kinds of examples of this on Pinterest, too. Feel free to display all those great hobby books and magazines. And for the designers among us: paint a wall with chalk paint so you can jot down all your ideas right on the wall.
If you can picture your ideal hobby room in your mind, it's time to get started. We're really curious to see your creative ideas. Share them with us on Facebook or Instagram using #Yarnplaza.
