It’s not quite December yet, but we thought we’d give you all an early Christmas present. And not just one, but two! We’ve designed two utterly delightful mini coin purses and you can find the free crochet patterns here in this blog post. Just a little something for you, from Yarnplaza.
Money, money, money… and we’re not just talking about the chocolate coins you might find in the toe of your Christmas stocking. Many of us enjoy the excuse of the festive season to splurge and spoil our loved ones and ourselves. Good food, special treats, exciting gifts, the list goes on. With your purse spending a bit more time in your hand these next few weeks, we thought we’d treat you to snazzy crocheted version that’s the perfect size to pop into a small bag or pocket while Christmas shopping. Or even better, make some of these cute coin purses as stocking fillers and get a head start on a handmade Christmas.
The mini coin purses are crocheted using Yarn and Colors Must-Have, Must-Have Mini and Glamour. You also need a Yarnplaza coin purse clasp, exclusively available in the color Rosé. Our favorite color! The small holes along the clasp arms make attaching your crochet work to the clasp as easy as mince pie (a pun for our UK readers, you’re welcome). One of the coin purse designs uses tapestry crochet to create a fun colorwork pattern. The other coin purse uses an offset knot stitch pattern, which creates a beautiful textured fabric.

Free Crochet Pattern: Mini Tapestry Coin Purse
Requirements:
- 1 ball Yarn and Colors Must-Have Mini in colors 018 Bronze, 044 Light Pink and 101 Rosé
- 1 ball Yarn and Colors Glamour in color 101 Rosé
- 1 coin purse clasp, 7 cm in color Rosé
- 1 Yarn and Colors Star Charm in color 101 Rosé
- Crochet hook 3 mm
- Thin needle
Abbreviations used:
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sc = single crochet (UK: double crochet)
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (1 stitch decreased)
The coin purse is worked in a spiral without closing each round. Use a double strand of Yarn and Colors Glamour wherever Rosé Glamour is called for in the pattern.
Tapestry crochet: This technique is used to create a lovely colorwork motif in the crochet fabric. You only use single crochet stitches, working over the color not currently in use. You carry this color around until you need to change colors. This makes the color
changes easier and neater. In this pattern we only carry 1 color along.
Changing color: When changing color, work the last sc of the current color as follows: (1) Insert your hook in the st, yarn over with the color you are currently using and pull it through onto your hook. (2) Yarn over with the new color. (3) Pull the new color through the 2 loops on the hook. (4) Continue crocheting with the new color, carrying the old color along.
Work rounds 1 – 10 in a single color, without carrying the second color along.
Round 1: Using 018 Bronze, sc 6 in a magic ring.
Round 2: Sc 2 in each st. (12)
Round 3: *Sc 1, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (18)
Round 4: Sc 1, sc 2 in next st, *sc 2, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 1 sc. (24)
Round 5: *Sc 3, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (30)
Round 6: Sc 2, sc 2 in next st, *sc 4, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 2 sc. (36)
Round 7: *Sc 5, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (42)
Round 8: Sc 3, sc 2 in next st, *sc 6, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 3 sc. (48)
Round 9: *Sc 7, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (54)
Round 10: Sc 4, sc 2 in next st, *sc 8, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 4 sc. (60)
Rounds 11 – 24: For rounds 11 – 24, follow the colors on the chart. Note: The chart is read from the right (where the round numbers are given) to left in each round because you are working in the round. From the start of round 11, carry color 101 Rosé Must-Have along. At the end of round 14, cut the color 018 Bronze yarn (but not too short so you can weave it in). From the start of round 15, carry color 044 Light Pink along. At the end of round 19, cut the color 101 Rosé Must-Have yarn. From the start of round 20, carry color 101 Rosé Glamour along. At the end of round 24, cut the color 044 Light Pink yarn and continue with color 101 Rosé Glamour on its own.
Round 25: Sc 60.
Round 26: Sc 60.
Round 27: Sc 4, sc2tog, *sc 8, sc2tog*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 4 sc. (54)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail on your work. Sew the pouch onto the clasp, using color 101 Rosé Glamour and a needle that is thin enough to pass through the holes of the clasp.
The pouch has a total of 54 sts and the clasp has 2 x 23 holes = 46 holes. That means we have 8 more sts than holes. Leave 3 sts unattached on both sides between the 2 arms of the clasp. That leaves 2 sts which we will deal with as we sew the pouch onto the clasps (1 st per side). Sew the pouch onto the clasp using backstitch. Attach 1 st to each hole, skipping 1 st in the middle of each side of the pouch (these are the 2 extra sts we had remaining). Fasten off securely at the end.
Finally, use color 101 Rosé Must-Have to make a small tassel and attach it to one of the eyelets on the clasp, together with the charm.
Free Crochet Pattern: Mini Knot Stitch Coin Purse
Requirements:
- 1 ball Yarn and Colors Must-Have in colors 018 Bronze and 062 Larimar
- 1 coin purse clasp, 7 cm in color Rosé
- 1 Yarn and Colors Leaf Charm in color 101 Rosé
- Crochet hook 3 mm
- Thin needle
Abbreviations used:
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- sc = single crochet (UK: double crochet)
- tr = treble (UK: double treble)
The coin purse is worked in a spiral without closing each round, unless otherwise specified.
Offset Knot Stitch: This coin purse is partly crocheted in offset knot stitch. This is worked by alternating 1 sc and 1 tr to the end of the round. Between these rounds of *sc 1, tr 1*, work a round of sc.
Round 1: Using color 062 Larimar, sc 6 in a magic ring.
Round 2: Sc 2 in each st. (12)
Round 3: *Sc 1, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (18)
Round 4: Sc 1, sc 2 in next st, *sc 2, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 1 sc. (24)
Round 5: *Sc 3, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (30)
Round 6: Sc 2, sc 2 in next st, *sc 4, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 2 sc. (36)
Round 7: *Sc 5, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. Change to color 018 Bronze in the last sc at the end of the round. (42)
Round 8: Sc 3, sc 2 in next st, *sc 6, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round, ending with 3 sc. Change to color 062 Larimar in the last sc at the end of the round. (48)
Round 9: *Sc 7, sc 2 in next st*. Repeat *-* to end of round. (54)
This was the final increase round. Take the coin purse clasp and lay it completely open on the table. Your crocheted circle should fit in the opening of the clasp exactly. If it is smaller, crochet the circle again using a half-size bigger crochet hook. If the circle is larger, crochet it again using a half-size smaller crochet hook.
Rounds 10 – 12: Sc 54. Change to color 018 Bronze at the end of round 12.
Round 13: From this point until the end of round 21, change color at the end of each round. *Sc 1, tr 1*. Repeat *-* to end of round.
Round 14: Sc 54.
Rounds 15 – 21: Repeat rounds 13 and 14, ending with a repeat of round 13. At the end of round 21, change to color 062 Larimar in the last tr.
Rounds 22 – 26: Sc 54.
