Tapestry crochet is all the rage. It’s a crochet technique that’s clearly becoming a trend. You can create incredibly beautiful patterns with it, which you’ll see in bags, baskets, bracelets, throws, and belts. We wanted to learn this too, and now that we’ve mastered it, we’re of course sharing it with you. Yarnplaza.com shows you some great examples and shares helpful tips and tricks!
Tapestry crochet is a technique used all over the world and is now being rediscovered as a new craft. If you know how to crochet, you can definitely do tapestry crochet—it’s just a bit more involved. Your crochet work becomes sturdier because of the technique you use. The great thing about it is that you can create many patterns that look beautiful on both the inside and the outside. Tapestry crochet is perfect for making bags, clutches, Coasters, baskets, rugs, and other fun home decor items.
Instructions for Crocheting a Tapestry
The difference from regular crocheting is that with tapestry crochet, you bring along the strands of yarn you want to use. You simply crochet single crochets, but you crochet around the yarn. Because you bring the yarn along, you can create quick and beautiful color changes in your pattern.
Color change:
When changing colors, crochet the single crochet before starting the new color, as follows:
- Insert the hook with the color you're crocheting with, then wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the stitch.
- Create a cover using the new color
- and pull it through the two loops.
- Now just continue crocheting with the new color.

What kinds of yarn do you use for tapestry crochet?
You can actually use any type of yarn for tapestry crochet, but since you’re incorporating the threads into your crochet work, it’s best not to use yarns that are too thick. Choose yarns with a Needle Size of 3 through 5.
We think these yarns are great choices—check out: Yarn and Colors Must-have, Phildar Phil Coton 3 & Phil Coton 4, DROPS Paris, Stylecraft Special DK, and Yarn and Colors Baby Fabulous. Suggestions are welcome!
