Crocheting the Alpine Stitch - Stitch of the Month

The word “alpine” was all the rage last month. The Alpine Formula 1 team unveiled its new car for 2022. We also saw the world’s best alpine skiers whiz down the mountain during the Olympic Games. So it’s no wonder this word stuck in our minds and inspired the new stitch of the month: the alpine stitch.

What is the Alpine Stitch?

It’s time to expand your crochet repertoire again, this time with the Alpine Stitch. Like many stitches, this one looks as if it’s reserved only for the pros. But nothing could be further from the truth—the Alpine Stitch is also a great choice for beginner crocheters looking to tackle new projects. The only stitches you need are chain stitches, single crochets, and (double) double crochets.

The alpine stitch pattern consists of 4 repeating rows. On the right side of the crochet piece, we work double crochets and relief double crochets. For the return row—the wrong side of the work—we use only single crochets. As we show you in the video tutorial below, you can use two different types of relief double crochets: a long double crochet or a treble crochet.

We alternate these relief double crochets by row, creating a beautiful texture. This adds depth to your project and, when using a longer double crochet, also results in a dense fabric. This makes the Alpine stitch ideal for crocheting clothing, cushions, and warm blankets. For a nice, dense result, we do recommend using a Needle Size one size smaller than indicated on the yarn label. If you’d like a more open fabric with a chunky look, use treble crochets instead of extended double crochets.
