Crocheting espadrilles with Saskia? Absolutely! Saskia Laan (from Haken en Kleur) was absolutely thrilled with our Spanish summer sandals and decided to give it a try herself. It wasn’t long before we received an email full of colorful photos. This led to two new espadrille crochet kits—and we’re giving away a colorful pattern for a pair of beach flip-flops!
Saskia is a very busy woman. Together with Claire Boeter, she published the crochet book *Haken en Kleur - A House Full of Happiness*, and in September it will already be time for a follow-up: *Haken en Kleur - Party!* Fortunately, in addition to maintaining her blog *Bijsaarenmien*, she still had some time left over to design espadrilles.

Star Espadrilles
These eccentric summer sandals feature a white decorative trim and are adorned with a few twinkling stars. They’re perfect for wearing with a little black dress or to brighten up an outfit.
Aqua
Espadrilles This pair reminds us of the sea. A beautiful, vibrant blue-green color, accented with white chains. They pair perfectly with a dress, shorts, and even jeans for cooler days.

Crocheting Espadrilles with Saskia
Especially for Yarnplaza.com visitors, Saskia has also made a pair of cheerful beach flip-flops (size 40). These red flip-flops are decorated with stars and are open-toed and nice and airy. The pattern is below!

What do you need?

Materials: Phildar Phil Coton in colors 84 and 76, size 3.5 Crochet Hook, espadrille soles, and a sewing needle.
Here's how to make the top:
Start with 22 chain stitches (or: place your foot on the sole, and measure the length of the chain based on the center of your foot. If it fits snugly but doesn't pinch, that's perfect!
Rows 1–18: one single crochet in each stitch.
(Check to see if you like how this looks on your foot—you can still make it shorter or longer!)
The border:
Using pink yarn, crochet a *single crochet, skip 2 stitches, (2 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, and 2 double crochets in the same stitch), skip 2 stitches. Repeat from *
Using Red yarn, work *one single crochet into the space of 3 chain stitches. (2 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets) into the single crochet from the previous round. Repeat from *
Here's how to embroider the stars:
Use a needle and thread to embroider stars: choose a center point for your star and find 6 points that are roughly the same distance from that center. Stitch your needle at those points, making sure to return to the center each time. Go around the back to your next center point.
Now single crochet this beautiful piece of fabric to the sole: use a long piece of yarn and make sure to use a circular needle with a sharp tip. Start at any corner you like, and note: At the front, where your toes are clearly visible, pull the thread just a little tight so that you get a small pleat.
Size:
This pattern is for a size 40 pair. If you want a larger or smaller size, measure the width of your foot and adjust your stitches accordingly.
