Party Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

Whose birthday is it? Well, just look for the person wearing the party hat! This party hat was designed especially for Petra’s (CEO of Yarnplaza) birthday. It looks very festive thanks to its elegant curled brim, striped pattern, and the pink pom-pom on top! Crochet this party hat for the birthday girl, and let the party begin.

Our haakster Annemarie crocheted this party hat using Yarn and Colors Epic and Yarn and Colors Must-Have cotton yarn. Choose your favorite colors from the huge color palette of Yarn and Colors Must-Have (100 colors) and crochet this cute, colorful, and above all, festive hat! You can secure the party hat in your hair with bobby pins (that’s how we did it). Alternatively, as you’ll see with most party hats, you can attach two strings (or elastic bands) to the hat, place the hat on your head, and then tie the two strings under your chin. Have fun crocheting and celebrating!

The idea is to crochet the hat nice and tightly so that it stands up on its own. You’ll crochet the hat using the Amigurumi technique, which involves crocheting in the round. Everyone has their own crocheting style, so adjust your technique accordingly.

Round 1: Using a 3.5 mm or 3 mm Crochet Hook and Pistachio yarn, make a magic ring of 6 single crochets, or do it this way: Chain 2. Crochet 6 single crochets into the first chain. Crochet 1 slip stitch into the first single crochet to form a loop (6).
Round 2: Crochet 2 dc in every 2the v (9).
Round 3: Crochet 9 chain stitches in each row (9).
Round 4: Crochet 2 dc in every 3the v (12).
Round 5: Crochet 12 single crochets (12).
Round 6: Crochet 2 sc in every 4the v (15).
Round 7: Crochet 15 (15).
Round 8: Crochet 2. *Crochet 2 single crochets in the next single crochet. Crochet 4 single crochets*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 2 single crochets (18).
Round 9: Crochet 18 (18).
Round 10: Crochet 1 single crochet. *Crochet 2 single crochets in the next single crochet, then 2 single crochets*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of your row, but end with 1 single crochet (24).
Round 11: Crochet 24 (24).
Round 12: Crochet 2 sc in every 4the v (30).
Round 13: Crochet 30 sts (30).
Round 14: Crochet 2. *Crochet 2 single crochets in the next single crochet, crochet 4 single crochets*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 2 single crochets (36).
Round 15: Crochet 36 single crochets in each row (36).
Round 16: Crochet 2 dc in every 6th stitchthe v (42).
Round 17: Crochet 42 single crochets (42).
Round 18: Crochet 3. *Crochet 2 single crochets in the next single crochet, crochet 6 single crochets*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 3 single crochets (48).
Round 19: Crochet 48 single crochets (48). Fasten off. Weave in the ends neatly.

Crochet a chain stitch onto it

If you crocheted the hat with a 3.5 mm Crochet Hook, use a 3 mm Crochet Hook for the chain stitch. If you crocheted the hat with a 3 mm Crochet Hook, use a 2.5 mm Crochet Hook for the chain stitch. Crochet the chain stitch to your touch; don’t pull it too tight. After you’ve crocheted the chain stitch onto your hat, you’ll see that you have a nice, sturdy cone shape.

When you look at your crochet work, you'll see that the rounds continue in spirals. Start with your chain stitch between rounds 2 and 3 at the top of your hat.

Using Must-have Pesto, make a starting loop in your yarn. Now insert the Crochet Hook through your work between rows 2 and 3, from the outside toward the inside. Pull the loop you made through your work toward the outside. Insert your Crochet Hook one stitch further in toward the inside, pick up the working yarn, and pull it up through your work directly through the loop on your Crochet Hook.

Continue working each stitch one stitch further inward, picking up the working yarn each time and pulling it directly through the loop on your Crochet Hook. Don’t pull your stitches too tight so that the hat keeps its shape. Since you’re crocheting in the round, you can continue this way until the end of Round 18. Weave in the ends neatly.

Brimmed hat

Use the same Crochet Hook as the one you used to crochet the chain stitch. If you look at the single crochet, you’ll see that it consists of 2 loops (a single crochet). Now, first, attach a new strand of Cantaloupe yarn to the front loops of your single crochet from row 19, so that a few loops form on the inside of your work.

Round 1: Crochet *1 sc in the first sc, 2 sc in the 2ndthe v*. Repeat *to*, until the end of the row (72).
Round 2: In this round, crochet 2 double crochets in each single crochet. This will cause your work to curl, creating a ruffled edge. Fasten off and neatly weave in the ends.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 in the single loops on the inside of your work. Neatly weave in all the loose ends. Now, using Girly Pink, crochet a chain stitch over row 19—just as you did on the hat itself—to add a decorative detail and to ensure the ruffled edges sit nicely.

Finishing

Use Girly Pink to make a pretty pom-pom for the tip of your hat. I used the Clover 35 mm pom-pom maker, but I trimmed the pom-pom so it was nice and small and round.

Have fun crocheting! We'd love to see your crocheted fairy hat!
