Assembling the dress

Place the granny squares like this, with the right side facing up. Keep the front and back pieces separate, because they will become two separate pieces.

Single crochet the granny squares together from top to bottom with a slip stitch. Always work into the back loops—so place the back loops of the squares on top of each other and join the two loops that are next to each other with a slip stitch. Crochet 2 of the 3 chain stitches at the corners into the granny squares.

From right to left, crochet in the same way, but at the intersection, chain 1 and skip this chain stitch from the vertical row.

Joining the sides together

Start at the top left corner, on the right side, with single crochet (sc) in the back loops only, chain one, and turn the work. Now crochet in both loops. Crochet one and a half granny squares with double crochet (dc), one and a half granny squares with half double crochet (hdc), and the last granny square with single crochet (sc). This means the bottom of the dress will be slightly wider than the top.

Crochet the other side in the same way.

Now crochet along the right side, starting at the bottom. Crochet single crochet stitches only in the back loops, chain one, and turn the work. Take the other piece and join the sides together with slip stitches, working only in the back loops. Do the same for the other side.

Shoulder straps (2)

Row 1: 40 sts + 1 chain stitch
Rows 2–5: 40 hst.
Finish off with a hv.

Single crochet the shoulder straps to the dress exactly at the corners so that the half-granny pattern flows smoothly.

Work around all parts of the dress, working into the back loops, and at the shoulder straps, work into both loops. Start at the bottom of the dress on one side. Start around the neckline and armholes at a corner of the shoulder straps.

Crochet along the diagonal granny squares, 2 sc in the pink st. (so 2 times), 3 sc in the white dbst., 3 in the yellow hst., join to form a round, hst. (17 sc per half granny).

Crochet 4-ch chains over all stitches, skip 2 dc from the previous round, sl st in the next dc, end in the first stitch with a sl st, and fasten off.

Granny (5x)

Row 1: Cast on 6 sts with yellow yarn; join to form a ring with a slip stitch. (6)
Row 2: Crochet with white yarn, chain 2 through the ring (1st hst), then work 11 hsts. Join this row with a slip stitch in the top chain of the first stitch. (12)
Row 3: Using white yarn, chain 3 between the hst. of the previous row (1st dbst.), then work 2 more dbst. in the same stitch, leaving the last stitch on the Crochet Hook each time. For the last yarn over of the 3 dbst., pull through all stitches (there are 3 stitches on the hook for the first petal and 4 stitches for the other petals). 2 ch., 3 dbst. (repeat until there are 12 petals). Fasten off with a slip stitch on top of the first petal. (36)
Row 4: Crochet with pink yarn, join in a chain space between 2 petals, 2 ch. (1st st.), 2 st. in the same space, 3 st. in the next space, 3 st. in the next space, 3 dbst., 3 ch., 3 dbst. in the next space (this is a corner), repeat 3 more times, and close the round with a sl st. in the top stitch of the first 3 ch. (60)
Row 5: Crochet as in Row 4, but crochet 3 x 3 sts in the space between the sts of the previous row instead of 2 x; at the corners, crochet 3 sts, 3 ch, 3 sts (72)
Row 6: Crochet as in Row 5, but work 4 x 3 sts in the space between the sts of the previous row instead of 3 x (84)

The first granny square is the top one. For each subsequent granny square, crochet up to and including row 5, and on row 6, immediately attach it to the first granny square by single crocheting it in place (see YouTube for instructions on joining as you go).

Join the first two granny squares on one side, the third and fourth granny squares on two sides, the fourth on three sides, and the shape of the hat is complete.
