Free Interior Accessory Pattern - Spruce Up Your Basket!

It’s September already—time sure flies! Summer vacation is behind us, the kids are back in school, and we’re seeing the first peppernuts in the supermarket. We’re putting away our bikinis, pulling out our sweaters, and slipping back into tights and leggings. Fall is just around the corner, and this time of year is perfect for getting creative with some crafts at home. We’d love to help you with that by offering a free pattern! Curious? Then keep reading.

Does this sound familiar? Stacks of paper on the table, keys lying around, a lipstick or lip balm in just about every room, toys, and other knickknacks that (almost) make you trip over them. Sometimes it’s just temporary, but more often than we’d like, we find ourselves looking at our mess. Tidying up is therefore a true art. Or rather… it can become an art. You can do this by buying or making some really fun, trendy storage accessories for your New place. In this blog, we’re more than happy to share Tips on how to spruce up a very practical storage accessory: the wicker basket. This way, the basket doesn’t just become a hiding spot for all your clutter, but it also creates extra space that’s actually nice to look at! :)

Wicker basket

A wicker basket is perfect for storing your things. A ball of wool lying around, a few loose Lego bricks on the floor, or scarves and hats that end up on the floor more often than they hang on the coat rack. But a wicker basket is also a great way to display a plant, for example! It’s just a little different from a standard pot from the garden center. You can also turn a simple wicker basket into a cozy laundry basket. As you can see, the possibilities for using a wicker basket are endless!

Spice Up Your Basket

Pompon

And there are so many ways to spruce up this basket. For example, you can get creative with pom-poms! These fluffy balls are ready in no time, add a playful touch to your winter hat or bag, and make a fun addition to Home Accessories.

What do you need?
- Fine cotton/Acrylic/Wool yarn. For example, Yarn and Colours Fabulous.
- Clover pom-pom maker (sizes XS, S, L, and XL)

The pom-pom maker comes with instructions, but if those aren’t clear enough for you, there are several videos on YouTube. Can you make them without a pom-pom maker? Absolutely! If you’ve ever tried making these cute little balls before (way back when), you might remember the cardboard rings. You stack two cardboard rings on top of each other, each with a hole in the center. Thread the yarn through the hole and keep repeating this step until you can no longer see the cardboard and the inner hole is completely filled. Then cut the wool loose between the two cardboard rings. Next, tie the loose wool together with a small piece of thread by threading it through the space between the two cardboard rings. Tie a tight knot, remove the rings, and your pompom is ready! For more information about pompoms, click on this link.

Spring
In addition to pom-poms, you can also get creative with fun feathers!

What do you need to do that?
- A ball of cotton/Acrylic/Wool yarn, such as Yarn and Colors Fabulous.
- 20-mm bead.

For the feather, cut 1 strand measuring 50 cm (center) and 40 strands measuring 15 cm. Fold the longest strand in half and lay it on the table in front of you. Tie a button in the strand so that a loop of about 2 cm forms at the top of the feather. Next, slide a bead up against the button. Then, continue folding 2 short strands in half. Be sure to place the first 2 strands under the long strand. Place the next 2 strands over the long strand. Next, thread the ends of the short strands through the loops. Once you’re done, pull the strands tight slightly. You should now have a knot. Slide this knot just short of the very top. This creates a small loop at the top. Then pull firmly so it’s secure. Repeat the steps. Would you like a more detailed explanation of the feather? Check out the macramé feather pattern on our blog.

Garland
No party is complete without streamers! These little flags usually only make an appearance at Birthdays, weddings, First Communions, graduation parties, or King’s Day. But why not turn a fun creative project into a party in itself? Spruce up your basket with a cute pom-pom garland!

What do you need to make a garland like this?
- Fine cotton yarn, such as Yarn and Colors Epic.
- 5 mm Crochet Hook.

Start with a chain of 100 chain stitches and join the chain with a slip stitch in the first chain stitch. Make sure your chain isn’t twisted when you join it! Check to see if your chain fits around the basket. The chain should be snug, but not too tight. The basket shouldn’t end up getting misshapen. Is the chain too short? Then crochet more chain stitches, but make sure your chain remains divisible by 10.
Round 1: Crochet 2 chain stitches ( = 1st single crochet), 99 single crochets (100). Join with 1 slip stitch in the top chain stitch.
Round 2: 10 chain stitches, 3 double crochets worked together in the 3rd chain stitch from the Crochet Hook; after your 3rd double crochet, you’ll have 4 loops on the Crochet Hook—make 1 yarn over and pull through all 4 loops. 3 chain stitches, 3 double crochets worked together in the stitch where you closed off the first 3 double crochets. Now work a slip stitch in the stitch where you started your first 3 double crochets worked together. Chain 7, skip 9 stitches, work 1 slip stitch in the next stitch.
Then seal it off.

Single crochet your pom-pom border to the basket with a few stitches, or leave it loose so you can change the decoration later. It's up to you! :)

Looping
After adding the pom-poms, feathers, and festive garlands, you can also decorate your basket with some text. For example, if you’ve been working on a laundry basket, it wouldn’t look out of place to write “laundry” on it. Just in case the kids lose their way to the laundry basket and their sports socks end up next to the basket instead of inside it. To create a word, you can try chain knitting. Looping involves knitting in the round; the yarn forms circular rows of loops, with the loops of the next row hanging from them. This eventually creates a thick, hollow cable. You can use this cable to form the word or words of your choice. Now you can start looping the old-fashioned way. This means you’ll need a ball of wool, a looping spool, and a Crochet Hook or looping needle. You can find various videos on YouTube that clearly explain, from start to finish, how looping works.

Here is a slightly more detailed explanation:
- 1 ball of Yarn and Colors Must-have
- Punnikmolen
- Pins
- Wool Needle with a sharp point

Yarn and Colors Wool Needles
Step 1: Use the chain loom to make a long strand of yarn, about 120 cm (depending on the word you're making).
Step 2: We're going to attach the word to the basket. Start by using the pins.
Step 3: Once you're happy with how it looks, secure the looper yarn to the basket. Use the Wool Needle and small pieces of yarn to sew the looper yarn in place where the pins are. And your upcycled basket is ready!

If your time or patience are decreasing, try using a loop maker. This tool is the perfect accessory for making loops quickly. Consider, for example, the Prym Comfort Twist Loop Maker and the Tulip I-Cord Loop Maker. Fortunately, using the loop maker isn’t rocket science, since both come with clear instructions.

Color Palette
If you’d like to get started on your basket but haven’t chosen a color palette yet, think about the colors that will complement your home decor—or someone else’s (if you’re giving the basket as a gift). Clear out your craft corner and see what leftover yarn you still have on hand. If you can’t find the right shades, take a look at our yarn collection, which includes 20,000 different types of skeins. If you’d like to see the yarns in person under natural light, visit our inspiration center in Zaltbommel. We’d be happy to help you find the right materials and colors for your DIY project!
