Our Test Panel
Who better to ask to test our Crochet Cotton than the experts in the field of crochet? Our test panel—consisting of Stip & Haak, Cutiepie Designs, De Haakzolder, Lotte Haakt, Crochet Addict, and Annemarie’s Haakblog—is each testing six different balls of cotton, including Phildar Phil Coton 3, SMC Catania, Katia Capri, ByClaire No. 1 Cotton, Lana Grossa Cotone, and our newest addition, Yarn and Colors Must-have.
Are you also curious to know which yarn crochets the most smoothly, has the prettiest colors, or feels the softest? Then check below to see which cotton yarn came out on top!

The Crochet Yarn Contest - The Results
The yarns were evaluated based on various criteria, including the softness and suppleness of the yarn, the range of colors available, the quality of the yarn after unwinding, and whether the yarn splits while crocheting. In addition, our test panel ranked the different crochet yarns from 1st to 6th place.

Number 1 - The Ultimate Favorite Crochet Yarn - Yarn and Colors Must-have
The No. 1 entry in our Crochet Yarn Contest has been named Yarn and Colors Must-have! The combination of the soft, supple yarn, the beautiful color gradient, and the sturdy yet soft crocheted fabric is what made this yarn the winner. Our test panel agrees: Yarn and Colors Must-have has a fresh-looking label, a beautiful matte finish, and a soft, sturdy yarn.
Lotte from Lotte Haakt: “What a beautiful new yarn. Gorgeous colors and a pleasure to work with. The yarn also feels nice and soft. It’s great that it’s available in so many colors. That’s really a huge plus.” Use Must-have for crocheting blankets, Amigurumi, or accessories! Yarn and Colors Must-have is available in over 100 colors, comes in 125 meters, and is suitable for crocheting with a 2.5–3 mm hook. And did you know there are also adorable mini skeins of Must-have? Discover it for yourself now and shop your favorite colors!

Number 2 - Phildar Phil Coton 3
Phildar Phil Coton 3 finished in second place, just behind the winner. This yarn scored the highest on all individual evaluation criteria, but was placed second in the final ranking of favorites. For both Herriët of Stip & Haak and Caroline of Cutiepie Designs, Phil Coton 3 remains a favorite! Herriët: “The yarn is lustrous, supple, and soft, and comes in many beautiful colors.”
Caroline wholeheartedly agrees: "Phildar Phil Coton 3 has beautiful color consistency and a soft yarn, resulting in a light yet sturdy crochet project." Laura from De Haakzolder on Phil Coton 3: "This really is and always will be a favorite yarn... (truly an old love!)". Use this beautiful Crochet Yarn to make blankets, clothing, Scarfs, or other accessories. Phil Coton 3 is available in 60 different colors, contains 121 meters, and is suitable for crocheting with a 2.5–3 mm hook.
No. 3 - Lana Grossa Cotone
Lana Grossa Cotone came in third place and was rated by our test panel as the softest yarn. Thanks to its softness and airy texture, this yarn is ideal for crocheting Amigurumi. Mabel & Frederika from Crochet Addicts: “Cotone is incredibly soft and supple, and the yarn really glides over your Crochet Hook. This yarn is definitely the big surprise!”
Lotte Haakt agrees, but also notes: "The yarn might be a little too supple at times. And a major drawback is that it isn't available in very many colors. It would be my favorite yarn if it were available in more colors." Lana Grossa Cotone is available in 47 colors, comes in 125 meters, and is suitable for crocheting with a 2.5–3 mm hook.
Number 4 - ByClaire No. 1 Cotton
Unfortunately, ByClaire No. 1 Cotton is no longer available.
Just outside the top 3, in 4th place, we find ByClaire No. 1 Cotton. The ByClaire No. 1 Crochet Cotton feels a bit stiffer and less supple than the other yarns, but it’s praised, among other things, for its wide range of colors and its attractive label. And as Annemarie from Annemarie’s Crochet Blog rightly points out, a stiffer yarn and a firm crochet stitch can actually be ideal for certain projects.
This yarn was Laura’s favorite from De Haakzolder: “Yes, a great brand—beautiful colors, lovely yarn. TOP! Also because this brand really offers something extra thanks to the person and the designs behind it. With this brand, you just want the pattern books to go with it, whether you’re an experienced Haakster or a beginner. The whole package just comes together perfectly. When you buy this yarn, you’re buying an experience.” ByClaire No. 1 Cotton is available in 54 colors, comes in 125 meters, and is suitable for crocheting with a 2.5–3 mm hook.
No. 5 - Katia Capri
Katia Capri ranks fifth on our list. For Annemarie, this is her favorite Crochet Yarn: “My favorite! A lovely combination of very soft yarn with a beautiful texture.” Caroline also has positive things to say about this yarn: “Katia Capri has a beautiful sheen, crochets smoothly, doesn’t split, and has a sturdy texture.” Although a stiff yarn is very suitable for some projects, not everyone likes this firm texture, and several bloggers have noted that the yarn feels a bit stiff. Katia Capri is available in 58 colors, comes in 125 meters, and is used to crochet with a 2.5–3 mm hook.
No. 6 - SMC Catania
Last but not least, SMC Catania came in sixth place. Although this Crochet Yarn finished in sixth place, the reviews of this Crochet Yarn are positive, and every blogger finds SMC Catania a pleasant yarn to work with. Herriët: “Catania has a shiny but somewhat stiff strand, available in very beautiful colors. It’s great for Amigurumi, but also perfect for Blankets and Cushions. It pairs well with the other Brands in this test.”
Mabel & Frederika from Crochet Addicts wholeheartedly agree: "Catania is a bit stiff, rough, and compact, but it glides smoothly over the Crochet Hook, has a beautiful sheen, and—thanks to its stiffness—is excellent for crocheting Cuddly Toys. That way, they keep their shape nicely." SMC Catania is available in 89 colors, comes in 125 meters, and is suitable for crocheting with a 2.5–3 mm hook.

Buying Crochet Yarn: How Do You Choose the Right One?
Perhaps the most important lesson we’ve learned from testing our cotton yarns is that everyone has their own favorite, and every Crochet Cotton has its own unique qualities. What’s a favorite for one person might be the least favorite ball for another. In short, there’s no such thing as a wrong choice when buying Crochet Yarn! When you’re looking for the perfect yarn for your new crochet project, first ask yourself what’s important to you in a yarn, and then choose the one that gives you the result you want!
