Chances are you have fond memories of it: the time you stood at the door, filled with wonder, as a big bag of gifts waited for you. That time of year is coming around again. Annemarie crocheted this cute “jute” bag especially for Sinterklaas. You’ll find the Free Crochet Pattern below, along with patterns for items like a Piet hat and a Sinterklaas wreath.
This crocheted gift bag isn’t made of itchy jute or wool. That’s because Katia Alaska yarn is 100% Acrylic. This means that even kids who are sensitive to wool can easily open it. Gift Bag - Free Crochet Pattern for Sinterklaas
In Tunisian crochet, there is a forward row and a return row. Together, these two rows make up one row in the pattern. The bag is crocheted in basic Tunisian stitch using an 8mm Tunisian Crochet Hook.
Row 1: Using an 8mm Crochet Hook, chain 34. Do not make this chain too tight. Stitch your Crochet Hook into the 2ndthe l from your Crochet Hook into the chain of chain stitches (where your yarn doesn’t come out). Make a yarn over and pull it up through the chain stitch. Leave the loop on the Crochet Hook. Insert your Crochet Hook into the next chain stitch of the chain. Yarn over and pull through the chain stitch. Leave this loop on your Crochet Hook as well. Repeat this for all remaining chain stitches. You will end up with 34 loops on your Crochet Hook.
Now make a yarn over and pull it through 1 loop on your Crochet Hook. *Make a yarn over and pull it through 2 loops on your Crochet Hook*. Now repeat from * to * until you have only 1 loop left on your Crochet Hook.
Rounds 2 through 5:
- First row: If you look at your crochet work now, you’ll see that vertical lines have formed on your first row. Your yarn comes out of the first vertical line; skip this one. * Now insert your Crochet Hook from right to left under the next vertical thread. Make a yarn over, pull the yarn over through the vertical line, and leave the loop on your Crochet Hook*. Repeat *to*, until you reach the last stitch. You now have 33 loops on your Crochet Hook. Pick up the 34th loop at the last stitch. To do this, insert your Crochet Hook all the way through your work, make a yarn over, and pull it through. You now have a total of 34 loops on your Crochet Hook again.

- Return row: Now make a yarn over and pull it through 1 loop on your Crochet Hook. *Make a yarn over and pull it through 2 loops on the Crochet Hook*. Repeat from *to*, until you have only 1 loop left on your Crochet Hook. After row 5, bind off this Tunisian section.
Insert your Crochet Hook under the first vertical line, as in the previous rows, but immediately pull the yarn through the loop on your Crochet Hook. Repeat this for all remaining stitches until you have only 1 loop left. Do not fasten off; continue crocheting with a 7mm Crochet Hook.
Crochet 1. Turn your work. Now crochet 33 single crochets into the slip stitch from the previous round.
At the end of your row, crochet 1 chain. Turn your work.

Now continue crocheting with the Tunisian Crochet Hook. Start your work again as you did in Row 1 on the chain of chain stitches. Crochet a total of 60 rows. After Row 60, finish this Tunisian section.

How do you put the bag together?
Now fold the piece with the right sides together. Pin it in place. Using a 7mm Crochet Hook, crochet the sides together with single crochets. Neatly weave in all the ends.
Now turn the bag inside out again so that the right side is facing out.
Using an 8mm Crochet Hook, attach a new strand of yarn to the open side. Now crochet 1 round of single crochet stitches all around.
Continue crocheting with a 6mm Crochet Hook. Now work 1 single crochet in the first single crochet and 1 slip stitch in the single crochet directly below it from the previous round. Repeat this for all single crochets. This will create a sort of frayed edge that curls slightly.
String
Using two strands of Epic Limestone yarn and a 6.5 mm Crochet Hook, chain 121 stitches.
Continue crocheting with a 6mm Crochet Hook. Now crochet 120 slip stitches back along the chain. Fasten off. You will now have a tightly crocheted cord.
