This scarf will bring you lots of crocheting fun and that wonderful feeling you get when you give someone a meaningful gift! That’s because you’re not crocheting this scarf for yourself (though you can certainly do that, too)—you’re making it for a man! Your son, partner, brother, coworker, or neighbor—any man will love this rugged men’s scarf. The scarf is a basic design with a rugged texture. Since you’ll be crocheting with Katia Alaska (thick acrylic yarn), this men’s scarf is wonderfully warm. Check out the Free Crochet Pattern.
Wrap this rugged men’s scarf casually once around your neck, or fold it in half, place it around your neck, and thread the ends through the loop—this is the warmest option! The scarf is sturdy and thick because it’s crocheted using a relief stitch, among other techniques, which makes it perfect for men because it looks rugged without being too bulky. Annemarie designed this scarf and chose a warm shade that’s ideal for men. Plus, this gray-green color is totally on-trend this winter. Of course, you can also choose a different shade—Katia Alaska is available in 48 colors.
Tools & Supplies
:- 4 balls of Katia Alaska in color (53)
- 12 mm Crochet Hook
- 10 mm Crochet Hook
Stitches
used l = chain stitch
v = single crochet
reliëfv = relief-fixed
hv = slip stitch

Dimensions of the scarf after stretching: 26 cm wide, 1.75 cm long.
Please note: The relief stitch creates a fairly firm crocheted fabric.
If you have a tight crochet stitch, you may need to use a 12 mm Crochet Hook to achieve the same result. If you crochet loosely, you may need to use a 9 mm Crochet Hook to achieve the same result. It’s helpful to start your chain stitch with a larger Crochet Hook. This prevents your work from warping after you’ve crocheted a few rows.
To achieve a beautiful final result, it's important to block your crochet project.
The scarf in the example was crocheted using a size 12 and a 10 mm Crochet Hook.

The pattern is crocheted back and forth. After each row, chain 1 and turn your work. This turning chain does not count as a stitch.
Round 1: Using a 12mm Crochet Hook, chain 181 stitches. Now continue crocheting with a 10mm Crochet Hook. Work 180 single crochets (180) along the chain.

Rounds 2 through 26: (see step 1 in the image) Starting with this round, you’ll crochet relief single crochets. To do this, insert your Crochet Hook from the front to the back through the first single crochet. Insert your Crochet Hook under your next stitch, back toward the front, and only then pick up your yarn and pull it through both stitches. Finish the stitch as a regular single crochet. See the image below for an example. Continue this until the end of the row. Crochet the last single crochet of your row as a regular single crochet.
Round 27: Now, for the final row, crochet a row of chain stitches. To do this, insert the hook as usual into the stitches of the previous row. Fasten off. Neatly weave in all the ends.
Finishing the Other Long Side
: Attach a new strand of yarn to the tip of the other long side. Now, crochet one round of single crochet along this side (see step 2 in the illustration). Do not crochet these single crochets into the bottom of the chain, but insert the hook one stitch deeper. Crochet this row along the bottom edge of the stitches from Row 1. At the end of this row, chain 1, turn your work, and finish by crocheting 1 row of slip stitches. If your work starts to curl too much, use a Crochet Hook one size smaller. Make sure your slip stitches are on the same side as the slip stitches from the other long side. Fasten off and neatly weave in the beginning and ending threads.
Finally, crochet a row of relief single crochet stitches over the v from the last edge (see step 3 in the illustration).
Now stretch out the scarf for a beautiful result. You can read all about stretching and steaming on this blog. .
