Carnival is the time of year when you can pull your crazy costume out of the closet again. People in the southern part of the country, in particular, know how to celebrate Carnival, so this rabbit from the top hat will come in handy. But what if you’re having a costume party, or you just think this rabbit is super fun to make? In that case, too, you can certainly get started on it!

Carnival Rabbit from a Top Hat: Yarn and Colors Must-have Minis

Tools & Supplies:
- 2mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn and Colors Must-have Minis: Black (100), White (001), and Pepper (32)
- Sewing needle with a sharp point
- Hair clip or headband

Carnival Rabbit in a Top Hat Crochet Pattern

Crochet Pattern for a rabbit in a hat:

Start at the bottom of the hat using a 2mm Crochet Hook and black yarn.

Row 1: Make a magic ring of 6 sc, or do it this way: chain 2, then crochet 6 sc in the first chain, so you have a circle of 6 sc (6).
Row 2: Crochet 2 single crochets in each single crochet (12).
Row 3: Crochet 2 single crochets in every 2nd single crochet (18).
Row 4: Chain 1, *2 single crochets in the next single crochet, chain 2*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 1 single crochet (24).
Row 5: Crochet this row in the back loops only, so that a few loops form on the outside of your work. Crochet 24 single crochets (24).
Rows 6 through 11: Crochet 24 single crochets in each row (24).
Row 12: Crochet this row in the front loops, so that a few loops form on the inside of your work. Crochet 2 dc in every 2nd dc (36).
Row 13: Crochet 2 dc in every 6th dc (42).
Row 14: Crochet 42 (42). Fasten off. Neatly weave in the ends.
Before you continue crocheting, sew the hat onto the pin or headband. Do this using black thread across the bottom of the hat.

You will now continue crocheting with White.
Attach a new strand of yarn to the outer loops of row 12. Insert your Crochet Hook into the loops from the outside.
Rows 1 and 2: Crochet 24 single crochets in each row (24).
Row 3: Make 3 decreases. Crochet every 7th and 8th st together (21).
Row 4: Crochet 21 single crochets (21).
Row 5: Make 3 decreases. Crochet every 6th and 7th st together (18).
Row 6: Make 6 decreases. Crochet every 2nd and 3rd st together (12).

Now stuff the rabbit's head and body firmly with stuffing, but make sure it keeps its shape.
Row 7: Make 3 decreases. Crochet every 3rd and 4th st together. (9).
Row 8: Crochet 2 single crochets in each single crochet (18).
Row 9: Chain 1, *2 single crochets in the next single crochet, chain 2*. Repeat *to*, until the end of the row, but end with 1 single crochet (24).
Rows 10–12: Crochet 24 single crochets in each row (24).
Row 13: Make 6 decreases. Crochet every 3rd and 4th st together (18).
Row 14: Crochet 18 v (18).
Row 15: Make 6 decreases. Crochet every 2nd and 3rd sc together (12). Now stuff the head firmly with Stuffing.
Row 16: Make 6 decreases. Crochet the stitches together 2 at a time (6). Fasten off. Pull the ending thread through the last 6 stitches to close the hole completely.

Ears:
Crochet a chain of 8 stitches.
Now crochet to the chain, work 2 sc in the first ch, 1 hdc in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ch. Work 1 sc in the 5th, 6th, and 7th ch. Now chain 2, work 1 sl st in the first ch. Now work 1 more sc in the 7th sc.
Now continue crocheting on the other side of the chain. Crochet 1 single crochet in the 6th and 5th ch. Crochet 1 half double crochet in the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd ch. Crochet 2 single crochets in the last ch. Fasten off.

Crochet another ear just like the first one. Sew the ears securely to the top of the head using small single crochet stitches.
Embroider with Black blanket stitch over row 13. With Red, embroider a little nose between rows 11 and 12.
Embroider a little mouth in Black under the nose.

Bow:
Using red yarn, chain 4. Crochet 2 double crochets in the first chain. Chain 3, then crochet 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Now chain 4 again. Crochet 2 double crochets in the first chain. Chain 3, then crochet 1 slip stitch in the first chain. Fasten off. Neatly weave in the beginning and ending ends. Wrap a black thread around the center piece a few times and use the same thread to single crochet the bow to the front of the rabbit.
