How big is a blanket? All the dimensions at a glance

Imagine this: You’re in the mood for a big project that you can enjoy working on during quiet evenings or days. You can always knit or crochet a blanket! It’s always a pleasure to use when it’s cold, and it adds a nice touch to your living room or bedroom. In this blog, we’ll explain all the different sizes for various types of blankets, so you’ll know exactly how big your blanket should be.

Blanket Dimensions

First, you need to decide what kind of blanket you want to knit or crochet, since there are many different types of blankets and their sizes can vary considerably. You can make a baby blanket, a single blanket, or a double blanket. Below, we’ll list the different types of blankets and their sizes.

How big is a baby blanket?

There are different types of baby blankets, each available in different sizes. Here is a list of the most common baby blankets and their dimensions:

Dimensions of the Maxicosi or stroller blanket

A Maxicosi or stroller blanket is a small blanket that you (of course) use to place in the Maxicosi or stroller. These blankets are generally slightly smaller than a blanket used in a crib; measuring 60 x 80 cm, the Maxicosi blanket is the smallest of all baby blankets.

Dimensions of the crib blanket

The name alone makes it clear where this blanket belongs: in the crib. A crib blanket is usually 75 x 100 cm. Your little one will be nice and cozy under this little crib blanket—and of course, it looks wonderfully cheerful, too!

Crib Blanket Dimensions

The next size up is the crib blanket, which measures 100 x 150 cm. This size blanket fits nicely in most cribs, and you can use it to wrap or tuck your baby in comfortably.

Dimensions of a children's blanket

When your little one gets a little bigger and has outgrown the crib blanket, it's time for a children's blanket. These blankets measure 120 x 150 cm.

What is the standard size of a single blanket? How big should you crochet a double blanket?

If you're going to knit or crochet a blanket and need to decide how big it should be, you can choose between a single blanket, a double blanket, or a twin blanket. Here's a quick rundown of all three, along with their dimensions:

Size of a single blanket

A single-person blanket is perfect for curling up on the couch all by yourself with a cup of tea (or another drink). If you want to knit or crochet a single-person blanket, aim for dimensions of 140 x 200 cm.

Dimensions of a double blanket

Whether you want to snuggle up on the couch together or just want an extra-large blanket for a quiet evening on the couch (with a drink, of course), it’s a good idea to knit or crochet a double blanket. These blankets measure 220 x 200 cm.

Size of twin-size blanket

The term "lits-jumaux" comes from French and literally means "twin beds." A lits-jumaux is therefore a bed consisting of two identical single beds pushed together. It is also slightly larger than a double blanket, measuring 240 x 220 cm.

Here's how to determine how many stitches to cast on and how many rows to crochet or knit

Have you chosen your yarn and decided on the size of blanket you want? If so, we’d be happy to give you some tips on how to determine how many stitches to cast on and how many rows to crochet or knit to achieve the desired size.

Knit or crochet a gauge swatch using your chosen stitch

It’s not the most fun task, but it’s very important to make a gauge swatch. This will help you calculate the number of stitches you need to ultimately achieve the correct dimensions for your Blanket. Count the number of stitches and rows/needles you need to make a 10 x 10 cm square. Grab your calculator and figure out how many times you need to repeat that number of stitches to reach your desired size. Based on your gauge swatch, you’ll know how many stitches and rows you need for 10 cm. For example: 16 stitches and 24 rows equals 10 x 10 cm. A quick calculation shows that you need 1.6 stitches per 1 cm, and sixty times that for 60 cm—so 96 stitches. You’ll also need to add cast-on stitches. Now for the height: you need 24 rows for 10 cm. This means 2.4 rows for 1 cm and fifty-five times that for 55 cm, so 132 rows. If you end up with a number that isn’t a whole number, you can simply round it up or down.
