Crochet a Kids' Bag—Perfect for Halloween & St. Martin's Day

Want to crochet a kids’ bag? It’s super handy and cute for little ones to carry their belongings—and perfect for collecting candy on Halloween and St. Martin’s Day, for example. We have three basic bags that you can decorate however you like. FanTAStic!

Crochet a kids' bag

For these little bags, we’re using SMC Catania, a sturdy, lustrous cotton yarn that comes in a wide variety of colors. With a Needle Size of 2.5–3.5, this yarn is perfect for small projects, like these little bags. Let’s get started!

What do you need?



Material of the blue bag


- 1 ball of SMC Catania yarn in green 389, blue 201, and blue 253 for the star
- Crochet Hook size 3.5

Crochet Pattern for a Blue Bag


Crochet 38 chain stitches using Blue yarn.
Row 1: 1 chain stitch, 1 half double crochet in the 1st chain stitch, 1 half double crochet in each chain stitch, at the end of the chain 1 half double crochet in the last chain stitch, and continue crocheting on the other side of the chain; there are 3 half double crochets in the first and last chain stitches. Total: 80 half double crochets.
Rows 2–10: 1 chain stitch, 1 half double crochet in each stitch: 80 stitches.
Row 11: Join with Green yarn; crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch.
Row 12: 2 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the same stitch, 2 double crochets in the next 2 stitches, * 1 chain stitch, skip 1 stitch, 3 double crochets in the next 3 stitches, repeat from *, join the row with 1 slip stitch in the top chain stitch.
Row 13: 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch, 1 single crochet in each stitch.
Rows 14–18: Join with Blue yarn, 1 chain stitch, 1 half double crochet in the same stitch, 1 half double crochet in each of the next stitches, and close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch.
Rows 19 and 20: Join with green yarn, 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet in the same stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitches, and close the row with 1 slip stitch in the same stitch.
Rows 21–33: Join with Blue yarn, 1 chain stitch and 1 half double crochet in the same stitch, 1 half double crochet in each remaining stitch, and close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch.
Row 34: Join with green yarn, 1 chain stitch and 1 half double crochet in the same stitch, 1 half double crochet in each remaining stitch, and close the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch.

Handle:


Using green yarn, chain 35, or crochet double crochets into a chain of 35.
Rows 2 and 3: Chain 1, work a half double crochet in each stitch. Sew the handle to the last row of the bag.

Star:


Crochet into a magic ring.
Row 1: Chain 3 for the first double crochet, then work 14 double crochets into the magic ring. Close the row with a slip stitch in the third chain.
Row 2: *6 chain stitches, 1 single crochet in the third chain from your hook, 1 half double crochet in the next stitch, 1 treble crochet in the next stitch, and 1 treble crochet in the last chain. Skip 2 stitches and crochet a slip stitch. Repeat from *. Join the row with a slip stitch in the first slip stitch of the row.

Material of the red bag


- 1 ball of SMC Catania yarn in red 192, pink 222, red 390 for the rose, and green 245
- Crochet Hook size 3.5

Crochet Pattern for a Red Bag


Crochet 38 chain stitches using Red yarn.
Row 1: 1 chain stitch, 1 half double crochet in the 1st loop, 1 half double crochet in each subsequent chain stitch; at the end of the chain, 1 half double crochet in the last chain stitch, then continue crocheting on the other side of the chain; there are 3 half double crochets in the 1st and last loops. Total: 80 half double crochets.
Row 2: Using Red yarn, chain 1 and work 1 half double crochet in the same stitch, then 1 half double crochet in each stitch = 80 stitches total.
Rows 3 and 4: Continue working with pink, pull the loop tight, and crochet 1 chain stitch and 1 half double crochet in the same stitch, then 1 half double crochet in each stitch. Repeat rows 2, 3, and 4 five more times. Crochet 12 rows with Red. Crochet the last row with Pink.

Handles:


Using red yarn, chain 35, or crochet double crochets into a chain of 35.
Row 2: 1 chain stitch, work 1 half double crochet in each stitch.

The border:


Chain 1 and single crochet into the first stitch, * skip 1 stitch and double crochet 5 times into the same stitch, skip 1 stitch and single crochet, repeat from * and do the same on the other side. Sew the handle to the Bag on the last row.

Little roses:


Chain 20 double crochets, 1 chain stitch, and 1 single crochet in the first stitch; skip 1 stitch and work 5 double crochets in the same stitch; repeat from *. Using green yarn, chain 40 and tie this chain into a loop.

Material of the checkered bag

- 1 ball of SMC Catania yarn in pink 256, green 245, purple 240, pink 222 for the flower, and green 389
- Crochet Hook size 3.5. Tip: The color order is always: Pink, Green, Purple.

Crochet Pattern for a Checkered Bag


Crochet 37 chain stitches using pink yarn
Row 1: 1 chain stitch, 1 double crochet in the 1st chain stitch, 1 double crochet in each chain stitch, at the end of the chain 1 double crochet in the last chain stitch, and continue crocheting on the other side of the chain; there are 3 double crochets in the 1st and last loops = 78 double crochets total.
Row 2: Join with green yarn and crochet 4 chain stitches, * skip 3 stitches, 1 single crochet, 3 chain stitches; repeat from *, and join the row with 1 slip stitch in the first stitch.
Row 3: Join with purple yarn to a loop, work 3 chain stitches for the first double crochet, work 2 more double crochets in the same loop, * 3 double crochets in the next loop, repeat from *. Repeat rows 2 and 3 13 more times. Work the last row as row 2.

Handles:


Crochet 36 chain stitches in pink, or crochet double crochets onto a chain of 36 chain stitches.
Row 1: 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the first stitch; 1 double crochet in each stitch.
Row 2: Join with green yarn and crochet 4 chain stitches, * skip 3 stitches, 1 single crochet, 3 chain stitches; repeat from *, and close the row with 1 slip stitch in the 1st stitch. Repeat this row on the other side.

Flower:


Crochet into a magic ring: * 3 chain stitches, 2 double crochets, 3 chain stitches, 1 single crochet. Repeat from * 4 times and close the round with 1 slip stitch in the 1st stitch. Pull the loop tight and smooth out the petals. Using green yarn, crochet a chain of 40 chain stitches.
