King's Day Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

This year, we’re celebrating our king’s birthday in style with this King’s Day scarf! Annemarie designed this trendy scarf especially for King’s Day. It features all the key elements: the colors orange, red, white, and blue, and a golden crown (with sparkles). Wearing this scarf is sure to make for an (orange) celebration. Read on to find out how you can make this King’s Day scarf.

April 27 is King’s Day again, and of course we’ll be celebrating in orange! For the King’s Day scarf, we’re using the vibrant orange shade from Yarn and Colors Baby Fabulous. We’ve combined this summery color with the colors of the Dutch flag: red, white, and blue. These three Dutch colors are subtly incorporated into the fringes at the bottom of the scarf. The golden crowns add an extra festive touch to this royal scarf! A crown has been crocheted on both bottom edges of the scarf using pixel crochet. This is a lot of fun to do and looks gorgeous, especially in the beautiful golden color of Durable Glam.

With this King's Day scarf, you'll be all set to celebrate King's Day in style! How are you going to style this King's Day scarf?

Crochet Pattern for a King's Day Scarf

We’ll start at the bottom of the scarf with the crown’s pixel pattern. For the first 19 rounds of your pattern, crochet from right to left. If you’re left-handed, crochet from left to right. This method of pixel crochet produces a nice, tight result, and you’ll have fewer loose ends to tie off because you’ll reuse the threads from previous rounds whenever possible. The pixel pattern is drawn in squares. Each square represents 2 double crochets. The 3 chain stitches at the beginning of your row do not count as a stitch and are not shown in the diagram.

The first few rows are written out in full; after that, you can follow the pattern as you crochet. For more instructions, watch the video on this pixel crochet technique. Make a total of 5 “glam” balls. Using a 4mm Crochet Hook, chain 44 stitches. Then continue crocheting with a 3.5mm Crochet Hook.

Row 1: Crochet 43 (43). After the last stitch, make a large loop, pull the yarn through it, and pull tight.
Row 2: Bring your yarn from the back of your work to the right side of your work. Insert your Crochet Hook from the front through the first v and pick up your yarn. Make sure the yarn isn’t too loose or too tight behind your work. Chain 3. This is to create height for the double crochets. Now crochet 42 sts to the end of the round, working into the stitch and around the yarn behind your work (42). After the last st, make a large loop and pull your entire ball of yarn through the loop.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2.
Row 4: Leave the end of the yarn from Row 3 hanging. Start this row by joining a new thread of orange yarn. Begin again with 3 ch for height. If you look at Row 4 in the diagram, you’ll see that you need to crochet 5 squares. So you’ll crochet a total of 10 sts with orange. Change to gold in your last st. Leave the orange yarn hanging.
Now crochet 11 squares, for a total of 22 stitches, using gold. Change to orange in the last stitch. Leave the gold yarn hanging. To do this, bring the end of the yarn from Round 3 to this point, and crochet into the stitch around the yarn again. After the last stitch, make a large loop and pull the entire ball of yarn through the loop.
Row 5: Now bring the orange yarn from the first stitch of Row 4 back to the starting point.
Now crochet 3 chains again for height. Repeat Row 4, using the strands from Row 4.
Rows 6 through 19: Continue crocheting using this technique and refer to the diagram. Where possible, use the yarn from previous rows, or join new strands of yarn.

Row 20: From this point on, you’ll crochet back and forth. Chain 1. Turn your work. Now crochet 43 single crochets (43).
Row 21: Continue crocheting with a 4.5 mm Crochet Hook. Chain 4 (3 ch = 1st st). Turn your work. Skip one stitch. *Work 1 st in the next stitch. Chain 1. Skip one stitch*. Repeat from *to*, until the end of the row, and finish with 1 st in the last stitch.
Row 22: Crochet 4 ch (3 ch = 1st st). Turn your work. Skip the chain stitch from the previous row and crochet *1 st above the st from the previous row. Crochet 1 ch.
Skip the l from the previous row*. Repeat *to*, until the end of the row.
Rows 23 through 28: Repeat Row 22.
Row 29: Crochet 3 chains for the first single crochet. Turn your work. Now crochet 1 single crochet in each chain and 1 single crochet in each single crochet from the previous row (43).
Rows 30–37: Repeat rows 21–28.
Row 38: Repeat row 29.
Rows 39–46: Repeat rows 21–28.
Row 47: Repeat row 29.
Rows 48 through 55: Repeat rows 21 through 28.
Row 56: Repeat row 29.
Rows 57 through 64: Repeat rows 21 through 28.
Row 65: Repeat row 29.
Rows 66–73: Repeat rows 21–28.
Row 74: Repeat row 29.
Rows 75 through 82: Repeat rows 21 through 28.
Row 83: Repeat row 29.
Rows 84 through 91: Repeat rows 21 through 28.
Row 92: Repeat row 29.

Row 119: Repeat row 29.
Rows 120–127: Repeat rows 21–28.
Row 128: Repeat row 29.
Rows 129–136: Repeat rows 21–28.
Row 137: Continue crocheting with a 3.5 mm Crochet Hook. Chain 1. Turn your work. Single crochet 43. Make a large loop. Pull the ball through the loop and tighten.
Rows 138–155: Starting here, you’ll continue crocheting the crown according to the block diagram. Always crochet from right to left. Whenever possible, try to pick up the threads again so you’ll have as few loose ends to weave in as possible.
Row 156: Bring the yarn around to the back again and crochet 1 more row with 43 sc. Do not fasten off.
Row 157: Continue crocheting with a 4mm Crochet Hook. Chain 1. Now work a row of single crochet along the long side. Work 2 single crochets around each double crochet. Chain 1 at the tip. Now work *1 single crochet, 1 chain, skip 1 stitch*. Repeat *to*, until you reach the next corner. Crochet 1 chain. Now crochet a row of single crochets along the other side. Crochet 1 chain at the corner. Repeat *to*, until the end of the row. Fasten off.

Finishing:
Neatly weave in all the loose ends. Now make fringes along the loose ends at the ends of the scarf. Choose whatever length you like. On one side, I used Red, White, Blue, and Orange, using 6 strands of Must-have and 4 strands of Tendresse per fringe. On the other side, I made fringes using 4 strands of Sparkle. For the red, white, and blue, I made 2 fringes per color.
