Crochet a Girl's Cardigan - Free Crochet Pattern
Tools & Supplies:
-Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big beige (color 945): size 74/80: 5 Balls | Size 86/92: 5 Balls | Size 98/104: 6 Balls
-For the flowers (or use leftover yarn): white (color 431), vanilla (color 411), Burgundy (color 2012), and Salmon (color 2039).
-4 mm Crochet Hook
-four 14-mm buttons
Stitches used:
Double crochets: Start each row with 3 chain stitches (= 1st st.).
Single crochets: Start each row with 1 st
Row of holes (number of sc. divisible by 3+2): 3 chain stitches (= 1st st.), 1 st., * 1 chain stitch, skip 1 sc., 2 st. worked together, repeat from *, 1 chain stitch, skip 1 sc., 2 st.
Pattern sequence: *1 row of single crochets, 1 row of double crochet, 2 rows of single crochets, 1 row of eyelets, 1 row of single crochets; repeat from *.
Crocheted border, number of sts divisible by 8+3: See Crochet Pattern. Start with the sts. before the left arrow, repeat the 8-sts. section between the arrows throughout, and end with the sts. after the right arrow. Crochet the 1st = 3rd row once. When the symbols at the bottom align, crochet the sts. into a single stitch.

Gauge: Pattern sequence using size 4 Crochet Hook: 19 sts and 15.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Crochet the front panels and the back panel in one piece up to the armholes: Cast on 101 (113/125) ch. using a size 4 Crochet Hook in beige. Crochet according to the pattern. Mark the side lines = 27 (30/33) sts for each front panel and 47 (53/59) sts for the back panel. When the total height reaches 15 (17/19) cm, set the work aside.
Sleeves: Cast on 29 (32/35) sts with a size 4 Crochet Hook in beige. Crochet according to the pattern. For the slanted sleeve edges, increase 2 single crochets in every 4th row and 4 (5/6) single crochets on each side in every 3rd row = 41 (46/51) single crochets. When the total height reaches 15 (17/19) cm, set the work aside.
Fitting: Now continue crocheting all pieces following the pattern sequence: 27 (30/33) sts for the right front, 41 (46/51) sts for the right sleeve, 47 (53/59) sts for the back, 41 (46/51) sts for the left sleeve, 27 (30/33) sts for the left front (= 183 (205/227) sts). In the 1st row, decrease (2/0) sts = 182 (203/227) sts. In the 5th row from the start of the neckline, decrease 9 sts evenly spaced = 173 (194/218) sts. Decrease 18 sts evenly spaced 3 times in every 2nd row = 119 (140/164) sts. In the next 2nd row for the neck, crochet only sl sts in the first and last 7 sts. In the next row, crochet v sts in the first and last 12 sts, crochet h sts in the 2 sts next to them, and crochet the middle sts according to the pattern sequence. In the next 2nd row, crochet only these middle 77 (98/122) sts. crocheting according to the pattern sequence. Then continue the pattern sequence with all sts, decreasing 18 sts evenly spaced 3 (4/5) times in each row = 65 (68/74) sts. Fasten off.
Finishing: Stretch the pieces according to the pattern, dampen them, and let them dry. Embroider the left front and back panels as shown in the photo using satin stitch and chain stitches with the Cool Wool colors. Crochet around the bottom edge of the cardigan with 4 rows of single crochet using a size 5 Crochet Hook in beige, increasing 50 sts evenly across the 1st row = 151 (163/175 sts), and increasing 51 sts evenly across the 3rd row = 202 (214/226) sts. Fasten off. Sew the sleeve seams closed. Crochet around the bottom edges of each sleeve with 2 rows of single crochet and 1 row of slip stitch using a size 4 Crochet Hook in beige, increasing 22 sts evenly spaced in the 1st row = 51 (54/57) sts. Fasten off. Using a size 4 Crochet Hook in beige, crochet around the front panel closure edges and the neckline with 1 row of single crochet; the number of sts around the neckline must be divisible by *+3. Crochet around the front panel closure edges with 1 row of crab stitch (= single crochet from left to right) using a size 4 Crochet Hook in beige. Crochet around the neckline with the crocheted edge in beige. Sew on buttons at the end of the top 4 rows of holes, approx. 1.5 cm from the closure edge; the top 4 rows of holes serve as buttonholes.
