What should we get “our mom” for Mother’s Day?

May 9 is just around the corner! Mother’s Day. The day when our dear (mother, mother-in-law, or great-grandmother) gets to be thoroughly pampered. That usually means breakfast in bed with fresh orange juice and warm rolls, plus a gift. These days, you can head to just about any supermarket to pick up bread, spreads, and all sorts of other delicious treats. But for many, the gift is still a challenge. “Am I going to give her another bouquet of flowers? Maybe a Mother’s Day high tea would be nice? Or should I just get her a dinner gift certificate or a book voucher?”

One thing is for sure: there’s a huge selection! Now, getting a gift is just a click away. The major online retailers in our little country promise that anything we order today will be delivered to our doorstep tomorrow. That’s incredibly convenient if you forgot to check the calendar, if congratulations are pouring in on your friends’ group chat, or if you simply suffered from “procrastination.” But if you really want to put your mom in the spotlight this Mother’s Day, set aside a few evenings and weekends in your calendar and go for a personal gift: your very own handmade creation!

Good at crafts

Crafting is actually a general term for the delightful art of using your hands and some yarn to create something out of nothing. It’s an activity you can do on your own. You can relax indoors on the couch with a cup of tea. But you can also enjoy working on a project together with your dear sister, friend, grandmother, or neighbor from down the street. Both the activity itself and the result of all your efforts bring joy.

In addition, a homemade gift gives you the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece—one that’s perfectly tailored to the recipient. Think about their favorite color, their home and lifestyle, and other personal traits. For example, if Green is your mother’s favorite color and spring is her favorite season, consider the beautiful Siem throw blanket. It’s a cozy blanket that features all the shades of green found in spring. A gift made with so much love and care is bound to be a hit!

And last but certainly not least, you’ll also save a nice bit of money by making your own Home Accessories or a new addition to your wardrobe. This means that after all your efforts to come up with a spectacular Mother’s Day gift, you can simply pocket that dinner voucher!

Too many to count on one hand…

Now that you’ve decided to put those hands to work and make a beautiful gift yourself, you need to choose what kind of craft you’re going to do. Will it be knitting, crocheting, macramé, or maybe using a punch needle? In this blog, we’ll give you ideas so that by May 9, you’ll have a Mother’s Day gift that’s truly something to be proud of!

Knit

We’re kicking things off with knitting. “Insert the needle, wrap the yarn around it, pull it through, and let it slide off”—a phrase most craft enthusiasts are familiar with. You don’t need much to knit. With a pair of knitting needles and some yarn, you’ll go a long way. If you’d like to start knitting, check out the tutorials to master the basic stitches. Once you’ve got the hang of the basic stitches, get started on this beautiful Bernadette cardigan—a gorgeous and versatile piece that can be styled with just about any outfit. A wonderful addition to your mom’s wardrobe.

If you’re already a pro and have more than earned the title of “knitting queen,” surprise your mom with the Brigitte Patent sweater. It’s a cute, slightly oversized sweater that looks great with jeans, slacks, and skirts.

Crochet

Another craft technique loved by many is crocheting. In crocheting, simple and complex loops are made with yarn, which together form patterns. You’ll need a Crochet Hook for this. You can use a wide variety of yarns to create a crochet project. Think of everything from fine cotton yarn for delicate pieces to rope for crocheting a rug or doormat. You choose the thickness of your hook based on the yarn you select.

Whether it’s a Home Accessory, a piece of clothing, or a practical household item (like a pot holder), crocheting offers endless possibilities. For example, if your mom’s new couch could use a pop of color, crochet a Cushion that’s sure to catch the eye! Another fun and practical addition to your mom’s home is the RibbonXL Hanging Storage Basket. It’s great for storing household odds and ends—and beautiful balls of wool!

If your mom never leaves the house in the spring without her denim jacket, consider crocheting her a scarf. Play around with colors so the scarf features shades that complement your mom’s wardrobe. If you’re not quite sure about the color combination, go for a complete Yarn Kit. For example, the Ecopuno Scarf is a lovely piece that adds just that little extra something to your mom’s outfits.

Macramé

Another craft technique that deserves a spot on this blog is macramé. In macramé, knots are tied in such a way that a pattern is created. Since macramé usually calls for a more distinctive and/or sturdier yarn, you can use it to create beautiful, eye-catching, and durable accessories for your home. Consider, for example, the Urban Veer Macramé Kit or the Yarn and Colors Three is a Charm WOW! Wall Hanging Bookleta kit that lets you combine the craft techniques of crochet and macramé. The result: a stunning wall hanging!

Punch needle

That brings us to punching. Punch needle embroidery, also known as punching, is a unique embroidery technique in which you use a punch needle and thread to pierce a piece of fabric and “draw” on it with the needle. If you’d like to learn more about this trendy craft technique, check out the blog post on punching!

But before you do that, we’d like to share a few punch needle tips with you for making a creative and super fun Mother’s Day gift. For example, punch a little heart that she can proudly hang on the wall anywhere in the house. Or, if crocheting isn’t your thing, punch a really cute cushion from Rico for your mom’s somewhat plain couch. If you’d like to get your mom started with punch needle herself, grab the pattern book *Het Punch Needle Boek* or one of the Rico Punch Needle books. Pair the pattern book with a Punch Needle, some yarn, an embroidery hoop, and a cotton fabric, and you’ll have a fun kit that’ll have her hooked on this delightful craft technique too. We certainly are!
