Crocheting the Moss Stitch - Stitch of the Month

September is full of treats! The new season of Haakster has begun, so we can once again sit back and enjoy episodes of “Coffee and Wool,” and the latest Winter Yarns and projects are back in the (online) showcase. You’d almost forget that it’s already time for a new “Stitch of the Month”...

...with the moss stitch taking center stage this time. This stitch should not be confused with the granite stitch and the weave stitch, which are sometimes also called the moss stitch. If you’re relatively new to the world of crochet but can’t wait to start your first project, the moss stitch is the perfect technique for crocheting your first home decor piece or accessory. That’s because you simply crochet a pattern of slip stitches and half double crochets. The texture you create is very sturdy, yet stretchy at the same time. Another great thing about the moss stitch is that the back looks exactly the same as the front. So there’s no “wrong side.” The moss stitch is perfect for crocheting blankets, shawls, and new covers for your cushions.

Free Crochet Pattern: Moss Stitch

To begin, chain a number of chain stitches that is divisible by 2, plus 1 extra stitch. For our gauge swatch, we chained 21 stitches.

Row 1: Start in the 2nd chain stitch from the Crochet Hook. Work a half double crochet into this chain stitch. Work a slip stitch into the next chain stitch. Continue alternating between a half double crochet and a slip stitch until the end of the row. Finish with a turning chain stitch.
Rows 2 through ...: Repeat Row 1.
