For this trendy hat and mittens, we’re using Essentials Big by Rico. This yarn is nice and soft, suitable for size 7-8 needles, and available in cheerful colors. We’ve chosen a beige base (color 12), but there are plenty of colors to experiment with. Finish it off with a bright neon color—it’s totally on trend this winter! How neon are you going to go?

What do you need?

Material:
- 4 balls of Rico Essentials Big, color 12
- 1 ball of Rico Essentials Big in colors 25, 28, and 32
- Crochet Hook sizes 8 and 10 mm
- Pompon color 21

Stitches used:
l. = chain stitches
hv. = slip stitch
v. = single crochet
hstk. = half double crochet
pc. = double crochet
dstk. = treble crochet
lobster stitch

Crochet Hat Pattern:

Start with a magic ring containing 12 hstk. in beige using a size 10 Crochet Hook (crochet the entire hat using a size 10 Crochet Hook)

2nd round: double everything (24 hstk.)
Round 3: *1 hstk., next st. 2 hstk.* Repeat *-* (36 hstk.) Change colors (Pink)
4th row: 4 ch. (= 1st tr.), 2 tr. in the same st., *1 tr., 1 htr., 1 sc., 1 htr., 1 tr., 3 tr. in the same st.* Repeat from * to *. Fasten off with a slip stitch in the top chain stitch. Change to a different color (ochre).
Round 5: 2 ch., * 3 sc in the center section, 2 sc, then crochet the next 3 sts together as 1 st, 2 sc.* Repeat from * to *. Fasten off with a sl st in the top ch.
Round 6: 2 ch., *1 sc, 3 sc in the middle of the 3 sc, 2 sc, crochet the next 3 sts together as 1 st, 2 sc.* Repeat from * to *. Fasten off with a sl st in the top ch. Weave in the ends and change colors. (beige)
Round 7: Join the yarn to the middle of the 3 sc and chain 2. *1 hdc, 1 dc, crochet 3 dc together over the next 3 dc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.* Repeat from * to *. Fasten off and change colors (neon orange).
Row 8: 2 ch. (= 1 hdc), 35 hdc remaining (36 hdc). Close with a sl st. and fasten off. Change colors (Pink)
Row 9: Crochet 4 sts. (= 1st double crochet), 2 double crochets in a stitch from Row 8 that lies directly above a single crochet from Row 7. *1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 1 single crochet, 3 double crochets in the same stitch.* Repeat from * to *. Fasten off with a slip stitch in the top chain stitch. Change to a different color (ochre).
Rows 10–11: See rows 5 and 6. Change to light (beige)
Row 12: See row 7. Change colors (neon orange)
Row 13: See row 8. Change to beige.
Round 14: Crochet 36 ch-st into the front loops.
Row 15: 36 sc in the back loops of row 13.
Rows 16–17: 36 sts.
18th row: crab stitch
Finally, attach your pom-pom to the Hat.

Crochet Pattern for mittens:

The right-hand pattern is described here; the left-hand pattern is almost the same. If there is a difference in a row for the left-hand pattern, it is indicated in italics.

Start at the edge with a size 8 Crochet Hook and light beige yarn.

Edge: Crochet a chain of 8 sts + 1 sl st. (Crochet 1 sl st after every round.)
Round 1: 8 sc.
Rows 2 through 17: 8 sc in the back loops. After the last row, do not fasten off; simply crochet 1 chain.

Hand: Continue with size 10 Crochet Hook.
Round 1: Crochet 18 single crochets spaced evenly along the long side of your border. Change colors (neon orange)

Row 10: 8 sc, 1 ch, skip 6 sts, 10 sc (thumb hole). (10 sc, 1 ch, skip 6 sts, 8 sc)
11th round: 19 sts, including the chain stitch
Rows 12 through 16: 19 sc.
Row 17: Crochet 2 sts together, 5 sc, crochet 2 sts together, 1 sc, crochet 2 sts together, 5 sc, crochet 2 sts together. (15 sc)
18th round: 15 sts.
Row 19: Crochet 2 sts together, 3 sc, crochet 2 sts together, 1 sc, crochet 2 sts together, 3 sc, crochet 2 sts together. (11 sc)
20th round: 11 sts.
Row 21: Crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet, crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet, crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet, crochet 2 stitches together. Fasten off.

Thumb:
Round 1: Distribute 8 sts across the thumb opening.
Rows 2 through 4: 8 sc.
Round 6: Crochet 2 stitches together. Fasten off 6 times.
Pull your thread through the last stitches and weave the ends securely.

Finally, sew the side of the mitten closed on the inside using a needle and thread.
