Crocheting a Hat

Crocheting a hat? They pop up every winter. Cool hats in all kinds of colors, with or without a pom-pom, and in all shapes and sizes. They never really go out of style. With this cool pattern, you can crochet a warm hat with a fleece band for winter. Choose your version!

The color combinations are super cute for boys and girls, but of course they’re also great for men and women. Don’t like the pom-pom? Then just leave it out! Everyone gets to decide their own style, and that’s exactly what’s so fun about crocheting: nothing is required, everything is allowed.

What do you need?

Row 6: Crochet double crochets and double every fifth stitch (=48 double crochets)
Row 7: Loosely chain 48 slip stitches.
Row 8: Crochet a double crochet in each double crochet of the sixth row and double every eighth stitch (=54 double crochets)
Row 9: Crochet 1 half double crochet in each double crochet from the previous row, inserting the hook only into the back loop of each stitch (= 54 half double crochets).
Row 10: Crochet 54 double crochets.
Row 11: Loosely crochet 54 slip stitches.
Row 12: Crochet a half double crochet in each double crochet of the 10th row (54 half double crochets).
Row 13: 54 single crochets.
Row 14: Crochet a half double crochet in each single crochet, inserting the hook only into the back loop of the stitch (= 54 half double crochets).
Row 15: Loosely crochet 54 slip stitches.
Row 16: Crochet a double crochet in each half double crochet from Row 14 (= 54 double crochets).
Row 17: Crochet 1 half double crochet in each double crochet from the previous row, inserting the hook only into the back loop of each stitch (= 54 half double crochets).
Row 18: Crochet 54 double crochets.
Row 19: Loosely chain 54 single crochet stitches.
Row 20: Crochet 54 single crochets into the double crochets of the 18th row.
Row 21: 54 single crochets, working only into the back loop of the previous stitch.
Row 22: Crochet 54 half double crochets

Boys' hat:
Row 23: Crochet 54 double crochets.
Row 24: Work 54 single crochets in the back loops using the color of the border you’re going to make.

Girls' hat:
Crochet through and including row 22.

Now crochet the rim of your hat using double crochet stitches. Turn the hat inside out, so the “wrong side” is facing out, and attach a strand of yarn. Crochet 3 rows of double crochet stitches and finish with a row of single crochets. Turn your hat right side out again and fold the rim over.

Explanation of the relief stick:
To make relief double crochets, crochet a double crochet in front of or behind another stitch from the previous row. So, instead of inserting the Crochet Hook into the top of the stitch (through the loop), you insert it around the stitch from the previous row. This is easiest to do with double crochets and treble crochets. Insert your Crochet Hook from right to left behind (or in front of) the stitch, and then crochet the double crochet as usual.

Fleece tape
New from MyBoshi: the fleece band. No more itchiness—it’s nice and warm and windproof. Attach the fleece band to the inside of the Hat as described on the packaging. Use the loop to attach the pom-pom to the top of the Hat. DONE!
