Learn how to crochet mosaics with our online mosaic course!

Challenge yourself and learn the art of mosaic crochet! It’s a really fun technique that lets you create the most beautiful patterns using only basic stitches. We’ll guide you step by step through a comprehensive online course, so anyone can get started with mosaic crochet.

Crocheting never gets boring! You’re always discovering something new. A design that’s just perfect for you, yarns that are incredibly appealing because of their colors and texture, and new books and magazines that tempt you to crochet your first garment or cuddly toy. But what also keeps crocheting so exciting is trying out new stitches and techniques. Recently, I—along with many of you—took my first steps into the world of filet crochet during the Dream Blanket 5.0 CAL. And today, we get to look forward to learning yet another new technique: mosaic crochet. Will you join us?

What is mosaic crochet?

The mosaic crochet technique is ideal for incorporating graphic patterns and designs into your project. There are two different methods for this technique: overlay mosaic and inset mosaic.

Crocheting an Overlay Mosaic

In overlay mosaic crochet, you use double crochets and single crochets and crochet mainly into the back loop. After each row, you cut the yarn and start again on the right side with a new color. To create the mosaic pattern, you crochet double crochets into the front loops of the underlying rows. Because these loops lie on top of the work, this method is called overlay crochet. Since this technique produces a large number of yarn ends, a double border is often used to weave them all in.

Crocheting a Mosaic Inlay

With the in-the-round mosaic method, the number of loose ends decreases, because with this method you turn the work and crochet the same (!) row back. You change colors after each round, and for this technique, too, you only need to master the basic stitches: single crochets, chain stitches, and double crochets. For both techniques, the mosaic pattern appears only on the front of the work. On the back, you’ll see a striped pattern.

Getting Started with Mosaic Crochet

“What kinds of projects can I make with this technique?” I can hear you thinking. Well, just about anything! Mosaic crochet is usually used to make accessories, both for your home and your wardrobe. Think of bags, hats, shawls, coasters, cushions, and, of course, throw blankets. But we’ve also seen the most beautiful mosaic patterns used in sweaters and cardigans. Ready to get started?
